D&D (2024) It's not worth it/we are out of luck/time

And on top of it... how a person reacts to these boards is partially dependent on just how much they genuinely care that what they perceive to be "correct" about this game is accepted by other people (especially the game designers).
Yeah, I was largely absent during the 4E era, as I knew I didn't want to play 4E or Pathfinder and had no interest in yucking other people's yum. It was easy to go "meh" and just go play Castles & Crusades for a few years.

That's definitely true. The last few years have gotten political and quasi-political stink on everything. Bad actors have intentionally poisoned the well of social discourse for their own short-term gains and we all live in the resulting mess.
Part of that I think is that Gen X was the first generation to really get into social media discourse (like message boards) when we were bringing about new socio-political discourse. When the 'net became a "thing" starting around '95... we Gen Xers were around 15-30 years old and thus were the original "young people" on the 'net talking up all our social philosophy. But as the Boomers ahead of us were much less online ... we could rant and rave about our political feelings and idiologies with much less pushback and disagreement.

However, now that Millenials and Gen Z are the new "young people" online and have their particular social philosophies and feelings of right-and-wrong... they find us "olds" are also still here and are more inclined to get argumentative about it. They don't have a completely new and open realm for which they have free reign... they have to share it with us. Or at least have to share it with us in certain locations-- Gen Z can probably talk about D&D's social philosophy on SnapChat or TikTok and will find not as much disagreement... because Gen X doesn't tend to be on those apps.

But on places like Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, or message boards like this? You'll find a good large number of greying-haired folk still hanging around, ready to disagree with "those darn kids today!" So of course the socio-political side of Dungeons & Dragons will be much more prominent, and much more prone to disagreement.

2E AD&D was largely just a revision of 1E AD&D. 3.5E was a revision of 3E. 1D&D is going to be a revision of 5E. Yes, they might be considered a "new edition," but it's going to be using the same 5E chassis (at least according to both what WotC has said and the playtest has shown).
So far I've seen less in the way of fundamental changes than the 3.0 -> 3.5 changes that included such things as changing the fundamental nature of the grid system to make square horses, changing the number of skills and effects of many of them, and changing the way the magic system, in particular the rules round spell resistance and damage reduction worked.

it isn't the game... it's these boards. Once the friendliest the most moderated and place I came for the most fun has become darker and darker over the years.
Ok, don’t try to box up the servers. But the rest of my advice applies. Take a break until after the new version comes out, then dip a tie back in and see how it goes. I recommend getting some kind of parental/business site blocker to help, and out it in the care of someone you trust. (For me it’s my caregiver. Without them holding that switch, I cannot reliably keep myself from repeatedly putting my face into the blender of places I know will make me miserable. Berserk brains suck.) I found that it’s usually smart to heed recurrent “maybe I should stop” thoughts, when they’re not just random spikes of depressed discouragement impulse.

This.

Huh. I haven't seen this argument made that I can recall. I mean, I've seen people argue against all sorts of actual opinions, but not that anyone shouldn't have or share their opinions. But maybe it's just that if I read anyone saying that, I'll just move on and forget about it. (I'm not at all saying that you're wrong if you feel this way). But don't let 'em get to you!

Oh, it absolutely WILL have a name. Of course it will. WotC is just not ready to reveal it until they have some cover art (or whatever) to go with the announcement. We're all just a wee bit over-anxious, is all.
Pretty sure the name of the first book will be Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook.

Well, let’s be honest here. A lot of the issues that have come up are the result of some very recent attitude changes.

2014 is pre-Me Too for example. And pre a lot of activism. The discussion around DnD is pretty reflective of the larger conversations that are going on.

2012, we were barely acknowledging the existence of a lot of these issues. Never minding having public discussions about them. A lot has changed in the ten years between the initial DnD Next play test and today.

For sure. Not all of the changes in society are bad ones.
