It's not just about whether the warlock has access to higher level spells but also about when they get access to them. A 2014 Fiend Warlock has access to Fireball at level 5. A 2024 Warlock does not have access to Fireball at level 5; instead, their access to 3rd level spells is delayed to 9th level, which is when most games - by WotC's own accounts! - are coming to a gradual end. As far as the game was concerned, the Warlock was treated as a full caster for purposes of spell progression.
At 5th level, 2024 Warlocks can select the Mystic Arcanum invocation, which grants them access to a 3rd level spell such as fireball. It's on page 37 of the packet.
Sorry, I thought by “we” you meant the general “we, the D&D playing community,” rather than specifically @tetrasodium and yourself. Apologies for misunderstanding, carry on.
You cited the OUTDOOR rule. Most of what we're talking about was indoor. I even specifically mentioned the 10 checks per hour for the castle itself, which definitely isn't that outdoor rule. Nor is the outdoor rule applicable to the specific creatures I mentioned earlier who wait for the PCs to be resting before attacking.
This isn't one of those discussions where you playing "gotcha" is helpful. The general claim I made is a lot of WOTC adventures it's harder to short rest like people were saying. The response was this adventure, and it's a false claim, and I think you know it's a false claim or else you wouldn't be playing the game you just played about the outdoor rules in response.
You think castle ravenloft is all of ravenloft? It doesn't even need to be fully explored in the 5e version & the wandering encounters for castle ravenloft itself on pg49 is not really supporting what you are pinning to it
RANDOM ENCOUNTERS
The first time the characters enter a castle area that
isn't otherwise occupied, check for a random encounter.
Also check for a random encounter every 10 minutes the
characters spend resting in the castle.
In most circumstances, a random encounter occurs on a roll of 18 or higher on a d20. To determine what the
characters encounter, consult the table below.
RANDOM ENCOUNTERS IN CASTLE RAVENLOFT
Encounter
Ezmerelda d'Avenir (see appendix D)
Rahadin (see appendix D)
1 black cat
1 broom of animated attack (see appendix D)
1 d4 + 1 flying swords
Blinsky toy
Unseen servant
ld4 Barovian commoners
2d6 crawling claws
ld6 shadows
ld6 swarms of bats
1 crawling Strahd zombie (see appendix D)
ld4 + 1 Vistani thugs
ld4 wights
Trinket
Giant spider cocoon
1 Barovian witch (see appendix D)
1 d4 + 1 vampire spawn
Strahd von Zarovich (see appendix D)
Those are hardly a concern to a group that's not trying to speedrun CoS by skipping the rest of barovia & heading straight to castle ravenloft. Most of those won;t even last two rounds against all but the smallest of groups. Worst case, leave to rest & come back, what's the GM going to do, take the heat for TPK'ing the party in their sleep? make them say "ok lets take another rest"? If that's not the thing you are looking for can you dig up the page number & maybe quote it?
I too do not agree at all. 2e & 3.5 adventures that were not even attempting to make resting difficult make the worst of 5e CoS look uncomfortably hospitable to resting often.

We've established that warlocks (and all PCs) have access to short rests whenever they want. Except when they don't. But that's a problem with the DM and/or adventure writer.

My point was, and remains, that REST IS INTERUPTED BY A RANDOM ENCOUNTER. Again, don't confuse this with a claim about how difficult the adventure is. It's not the same position. I am not commenting on how hard or easy an adventure is to get through. I am saying the premise that it's easy to take a short rest whenever a Warlock or Monk wants one in WOTC published adventures is not a good premise. That's it. That's what I am talking about.
