Well, in TOS any "character development" (e.g. The Galileo Seven) was reset at the start of the next episode.

I guess the issue is, with SNW doing "planet of the week" if STL also did that, it would basically be the same show with a different cast.

Assuming Jack Crusher really is Kelvin timeline Kirk, it should take him about two hours to save the galaxy. They could take the multiple serialised stories per season approach, like old Doctor Who or The Clone Wars. Lockwood & Co. also did this, adapting two novels with distinct stories into one season.

Alternatively, SNW could be wound up before it overstays it's welcome, segwaying into the Academy show, STL replacing it (with a little overlap).

I don't follow the logic there. Picard and Discovery both do season-long serials. Are they the same show with a different cast? Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks both do mostly "planet of the week". Are they the same show with a different cast?

Just rewatched Season 1 of Picard, it might not feel like traditional Star Trek, I mean I get it, but it is good Sci Fi, really good Sci Fi. I get the complaints, but if this had been in a seperate setting were it didn't have to but heads with Star Trek expectations I think it'd have been hugely popular and less divisive. I personally have a broader more open mind for the Star Trek universe so I like it in Star Trek however.

I liked Picard season 1 too. I even enjoyed bits of season 2, disjointed and incoherent though it was.

I would rate P1 as better than P3, which is entirely dependant on nostalgia.

I think that my "Star Trek purism" might be swayed by how much I like the series. I felt that season 1 played off themes that were brought up in TNG, but not fully expanded upon, so it felt like "real" Star Trek to me. YMMV.

Well sure, the core plot of Picard 1 is a fine premise…but it doesn’t work in Star Trek.

But you can say that about a million settings. Settings enhance certain types of stories and hinder others. Not every setting is a good vehicle to tell every story.

I didn't see anything un-Star Trek about it apart from the slower pace. Pretty much all the story elements where things we have seen on the show before.

I kinda feel that season long serialized plots are weird for Star Trek, but it can be made to work. I just don't think it worked all that well for Discovery or most of Picard.

I generally agree. I think the season arcs in both shows have felt stretched out and like they were playing for time. Maybe they should try do smaller arcs within a season, or shorter seasons.

The occasional stand alone episode would have really helped those shows out I think. See SNW.
