WotC WotC'S May Community Update Talks School Support, Accessibilty, & Creator Marketplaces

Also convention attendance and pre-alpha tests of the Virtual Tabletop

The Community Update page on D&D Beyond has a new entry which briefly covers topics such as ongoing support for schools and clubs, accessibilty of D&D Beyond for players with disabilities, early plans for the third-party creator marketplace, plans for convention attendance, and the upcoming Virtual Tabletop.

It's mainly a (very brief) recap of things which came out of the recent D&D Creator Summit (see D&D Creator Summit--VTT & One D&D, D&D Creator Summit--'D&D Beyond And Beyond', D&D Creator Summit -- Morning Sessions) but the key points include:
  • One D&D reiterated again as being 5th edition, not a new edition. This is something WotC is repeating frequently, and is a message they are clearly very keen to get across.
  • School and club support includes teaching kits, afterschool club kits, and free access to D&D Beyond resources for educators.
  • Plans to connect with accessibility experts to ensure D&D Beyond is a tool that everybody can use.
  • Migration to D&D Beyond as the 'front door' of D&D.
  • Intention to eventually create a third party marketplace, but this is a long way in the future.
  • A new creator summit at Gen Con in August.
  • Pre-alpha tests of the VTT with small groups.

I 4th the need to be able to filter only on books I own.....also, if I own a book, don't make the first result a book I don't own. Now, I get they are trying to sell me books this way....I get that....I have an MBA in marketing...but come on. I'm paying for the service, I should be able to do this.

Very excited for 3p content to be there. I hope it is easy for me to set up monsters and stuff, because I'd love to sell there.

Of course, what I really want is the VTT.....

We've got some teachers on the forums here, I would love to hear their thoughts on the class activities and the club kits. I think it's a good and interesting project. But I do think in a way it's tacky how much branding they've included in it.

I also thought it was interesting that they used the phrase "Mazes & Mysteries" given the "Mazes & Monsters" that many of us are familiar with.

No man, that's just people posting their opinions, in a light-hearted way. Until ENWorld mandates positive-posts-only-regarding-our-corporate-overlords, I guess WoTC are gunna keep getting mentioned in dispatches.
That or Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins start going door to door to beat people up for trash talking WotC on the Internet (a la Jay and Silent Bob).

It just gets old that every single thread that talks about WOTC and a fair number that are just talking about something game related get dumped on almost immediately.

It's boring when the complaints are the same litany that we hear on repeat that have nothing to do with the thread topic.

I'm not saying you can't post. I'm assuming you're not telling me that I can't say that the same unoriginal complaints get old, right?

Add something related to the topic? Positive or negative like the issues with DDB that I chimed in on? Go for it, at least it's related. Post for the umpteenth time the poor horse that's been beaten to death?

I understand being tired of it, but obviously people are still pretty angry. Sometimes not expressing that anger when given the opportunity can feel like forgiveness.

n/m. delete.
This is an emotional situation for many people, so it should be expected that folks will react emotionally. For myself, I don't like WotC and I mostly don't like OneD&D. Given the opportunity to respond to complaints about something they are doing, I have no problem encouraging folks to seek out other 5e companies, or other games as appropriate. Since this is a less viable option for WotC owned settings, those discussions are naturally more frustrating and can get heated, but otherwise there are other companies IMO more deserving of my money.
