D&D 5E Halflings are the 7th most popular 5e race

Weird. I just did the same search:

Elf came up with 807 entries
Halfling 435.

I'm absolutely not questioning you. I just wonder why we get different results.

Note, if I enter "elven" I get 960 entries (although a LOT of those are maps since Elven Tower is a publisher)

Dragonborn with 397
Tiefling 390

Genasi: 132

I think that nicely illustrates my point. Despite Genasi being a more popularly played race, we have about three times more books about halflings. Being in the PHB means that they take up a disproportionate amount of space. Shouldn't a more popularly played race not have more supplementary information about it?
I only searched the content type 'DMS Guild' to exclude classic editions and 'official' content.

Btw. If anyone is keeping score I absolutely know I’m whistling in the wind here. There is zero chance that gnomes or halflings are going anywhere. I am totally cognizant of that fact.

But hope springs eternal. We at least managed to get two new races in the phb. One might hope for a couple more before the end of the next fifty years.

One of the reasons for not adding new races to the PHB is WotC want to sell supplements. You are not intended to be locked into core rules content, you are meant to spend money and buy additional stuff. Otherwise it's impossible to make a sustained profit.

That's exactly how Paul describes it. Such an RPG should at least yield something for 10 years and for this, new books must simply come out regularly. Especially we have seen that in the 4th edition. But what the heck, with the 3 basic rulebooks you can get far and as always, you are not forced to buy more material, it's all voluntary.

That, I get.

I’m never gonna get the Cleric replaced with a proper priest, or get 5e classes with ribbons and crunchier features that tie them to the world, or murder the thing pretending to be a bard and replace It with a bard.

Here are the traits of the Humblewood Jerbeen (~mousefolk) so as to enable comparison.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.
(Age. Jerbeens grow quickly, reaching maturity around 5 years. They are the shortest lived of all the humblefolk races, living just about 40 years. Alignment. Being small and facing many threats in the world, jerbeens are sensitive to the feelings of others, and tend towards good alignments. They also lean more towards lawful alignments due to their co-operative nature).
Size. Jerbeens have incredibly small and light bodies, standing between 2 and 3 feet tall, and weighing between 20 and 40 pounds. Your size is Small.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Standing Leap. Your base long jump is 30 feet, and your base high jump is 15 feet, with or without a running start.
Nimbleness. You can move through the space of any creature that is of a size larger than yours.
Take Heart. You have advantage on Strength saving throws and saving throws against being frightened as long as you are within 5 feet of an ally who isn’t frightened or incapacitated that you can both see and hear.
Team Tactics. You can use the Help action as a bonus action.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Birdfolk and Jerbeen.

Halflings are boring. so lacking in features in of themselves that they have to be metaphysically propped up by luck.
Why can't small creatures have the mobility of gymnasts in ways other than being able to squeeze in gaps? Why are halflings' stealth advantage reduced to hiding and not, with historically big feet, to moving quietly? Why not have advantage in diplomacy type checks?

Why can't small creatures have the mobility of gymnasts in ways other than being able to squeeze in gaps?
Because they are based on folk form Tolkien who are more interested in food and drink than gymnastics.

In any case, given the standard halfling +2 Dex, the average halfling is marginally better at acrobatics than the average human.
with historically big feet
Since the Tolkien lawsuit D&D halflings do not have big feet.
Why not have advantage in diplomacy type checks?
Why would they? There is nothing in the lore to indicate halflings are particularly diplomatic.

But broadly, 5e tried to trim races down. In 3rd edition/Pathfinder halflings have a great long list of ribbon abilities like your Humblewood race, but that goes against the KISS design ethos of 5e.
