D&D 5E Halflings are the 7th most popular 5e race

I can't remember what we had 39 years ago! I have enough trouble remembering what we had in 5e, but these are what I can remember:

Halfling 4
Dwarf 4
Warforged 4
Human 3
Orc 2
Bugbear 2
Genasi 2
Elf 2
Half Orc (conventional) 1
Gnome 1
Goliath 1
Goblin 1
Changling 1
Firbolg 1
Harengon 1
Satyr 1
half orc/half elf 1
Owlin 1
Fairy 1
Tabaxi 1

Every thread. It gets old. We get it. You “don’t care”.

Lol exactly.

Your missing my point. It has never, ever been about halflings.

It has always been about adding new things to the base game. I’m assuming a limited number of races in the phb so if I want new ones, something has to go.

That something is gnomes and halflings AFAIC because after 50 years they have never been more than the least played phb races.

I’d include half orcs there too but they’re already getting the heave. Great. Breaking the shackles of dead authors one link at a time. Half orcs and half elves reduced to a sidebar? Fantastic.

Other option could be adding a player handbook 2, but WotC has said this time this is not going to be their strategy.

My opinion is even when they were forgotten by the players gnomes and halflings are perfect to be the friendly nPCs who have to be protected by the players. In certain way, they are very cute, perfect to be the sidekicks, working in the stronghold built by the PCs.

The halflings have got that touch of "David vs Goliath", the brave hero who face bigger enemies, but more focused into Des and Int insteard the Str. (The trope of shorter but ferocious is for the dwaves). And halflings+gnomes have got that touch of vintage cartoon about little cute creatures.

Yay for erasure of mixed cultures like Mexico or the Cajun bayou so you can fulfill your weird thing with imaginary shackles! /s

I am all for D&D growing beyond tradition and source material most of the player base isn't even familiar with. And I am clear and open and non-dissembling about my personal distain for what D&D does with gnomes.

However, I'm not going to be about taking people's things away if it's not tied to bad mechanics or an actively bad piece of the gaming culture, like, say the wizard.

Bad according to you. Not everyone agrees on what constitutes "an actively bad piece of the gaming culture," and even fewer would list "the wizard" as an example of it. A handful of folks here are in the habit of stating their opinions like accepted matters of fact, and they just...aren't.

In my opinion, the wizard is an excellent character class as-written. I really enjoyed my Human Wizard (School of Abjuration, Sailor background) that I played in our last campaign...I played him for just over 2 years, rising from 1st level all the way to 16th level. My character's role in the group was the "spell-breaker," responsible for removing curses, dispelling area effects, debuffing enemies, breaking charms, and countering incoming spells before they could detonate, that sort of thing. It was a high-magic campaign so this really kept me on my toes! Even against non-magical foes I wasn't bored: my character was sweeping the board with Lightning Bolts, targeting BBEGs with upcast Magic Missiles (or Banishing them outright), casting Haste on our Fighter, and confounding our enemies with Misty Step, Blur, Darkness, and the like. The great part of my Wizard was that he made everyone else in the party that much greater.

If I had one gripe about the Wizard, it would be the spellbook. Having to create and manage both a list of spells known and a list of spells prepared felt like a lot of work to me. But that's a very minor gripe...it wouldn't keep me from playing another wizard in the future.

Four stars, would recommend.

Among the dozens of options. The Halfling is near the top, by the numbers provided un this thread.

Are those dozens of options in the phb? You must have a really different one than me. Where can I buy yours?

I have REPEATEDLY stated that I’m talking about the base game. Gnomes are more popular than Githyanki? Gee there’s a shock.

So one more time. I am talking about the PHB.
