D&D (2024) 2024 Core rule book changes

GREYHAWK CONFIRMED?!?!?@?@?

"At the core of the Dungeon Master’s Guide (2024) will be a newly revised section on creating your own homebrew campaign, which will include a sample campaign setting. Then the book will show budding DMs how to build it out with the needs and desires of their players in mind.

"“I don’t want to use the word ‘stripped-down,’ but let’s say it’s very condensed,” Perkins said. “But it is a complete setting, and you can take this campaign skeleton and add some flesh to it. Decide where you want to place your campaign in this setting, and then make it your own. [We] give you a poster map that you can use of this campaign setting, and give you hooks within the campaign setting to help inform your decision about which parts of the campaign you want to use, [so that you can decide] which conflicts you think are going to be important in this game.”"
Actually sounds a lot like the plan for the Nentir Vale to me. I don't think that is what it will be, but the structure is very similar.

Note that if you can play a character with one parent who was an orc, they can be "still in the game" while not having a separate, detailed species for half-orcs.
I guess it'll depend on how big the gap is between Human* mechanics and Orc* mechanics as to whether there's room for - or a need for - something to fill that gap. I mean, if the only mechanical difference ends up being that Orcs have night sight and Humans don't while the rest is all just physical appearance or other fluff, then yeah, just pick one.

* - or insert any other two species here that can viably interbreed in your setting.

1. Yeah, emphasis mine. I don't know if they meant orc or if half-races somehow returned.

2. This doesn't bother me in the slightest. I couldn't tell you the last time I designed a character and didn't pick class first. Even in halcyon days, I always thought "what race synergizes with wizard?" Rather than "what class pairs well with elf?"
Everyone's different, of course. The way I figure it, life makes us choose heritage first*, why shouldn’t the game?

*Of course, life actually chooses stuff like that for us.

Interesting with the extra page space in the PHB they didn’t choose to pull in the Artificer, for a nice baker’s dozen.
Perhaps they don't want to treat artificer with the same level of respect as the other classes, apparently even if given the opportunity.

Ugh. I see no purpose to AL play. If you want to run in public for strangers, just advertise at your LGS or school and do it. The organization is pointless.
Unfortunately, in part because first TSR and later WotC have seen it both as a gateway to attract new players and as a means of keeping rules consistency between tables, organized play has had an outsized influence going all the way back to the early RPGA days.

This won't change until-unless publisher-backed organized play goes away, and I don't see that happening anytime soon if ever.
