D&D (2024) UA Ranger (Playtest 6)

I don't really understand why it should be terrain dependant at all. Especially if you can just swap it out anyway.
My thoughts exactly. I mean how often is it going to come up at low levels where a ranger crosses terrain and needs to make a check before the long rest.

And at high levels wtih teleports and the like.....well is there REALLY a problem with a ranger just having the ability always working at that point?

I think you just give them this bonus straight up. Anytime they are in a natural terrain, they get the bonus. Simple and easy, just be done with it.

The idea I think was intended for Natural Explorer was that itd be coming up during a Hex crawl, and in a hex crawl you aren't going to be crossing endless miles of the exact same terrain. Youd be crossing a variety of them, and ergo the bonuses wouldn't always be turned on.

The same idea applies to this miniscule version of that. If you're just running Montages or even point crawls you're not getting enough detail out of the travel sequence to make this kind of mechanical interaction worthwhile.

Natural Explorer makes a lot more sense when you pair it with a Hex Crawl.

These spells let you chose your targets.

So when your barbarian gets swarmed, you can drop a conjure on him without a problem.
Yep. Much improved over previous versions, and really good use of a slot.

Does seem to me they could add something to level 13, even if it’s a ribbon.
something is taken away always when something is added.

so to rephrase that, 2 expertise instead of 1 and a bonus (bad)3rd level spell known.
Quite a good spell, that isn’t there in place of anything. You get 3rd level spells and second expertise at the same level. It’s a bonus feature.

How to make Conjure barrage and Conjure volley class features that can be used at-will and be augmented by spending spell slots.

Conjure barrage:
9th level feature.

As an action you can Attack creatures of your choice in 30ft cone.
Make attack roll for every creature separately.

Augment: you can spend a spell slot to augment this attack.
add 10ft range to your cone and +1d8 damage per spell level slot.
If you spend 3rd level slot or higher, missed attacks deal half damage.

Conjure volley:
17th level feature:

As an action make a ranged attack with your ranged weapon against all targets in 40ft radius.

Augment: you can spend a spell slot to augment this attack.
add +2d6 damage per level of spell slot.
If you spend a spell slot of 5th level or higher, missed attacks deal half damage.

It's because Adv/Disadvantage is only 1 degree.

It should be like +X in all terrains and +Y in your favored terrains. Because since 5e went for simplicity, there is no other level to go after advantage.

Other than "more rerolls".

Add: when Hunter's mark is casted with this feature, it does not need Concetration and there is no spell components.
also, use prof bonus, now Wisdom for usage.
Apparently, according to the notes in change notes in the packet, they thought that Hunter's Mark without the Concentration was "too overpowered in playtests."
