I own alot of guitars and I have 3 or 4 go tos that I play regularly, others that sit on a wall and get played only once in a while. That Ibanez is in the latter category. I played it quite a bit when I first got it then kind of overlooked it. The tubes in my amp at the time were stock and got pretty bad reviews so that probably made the pickups seem muddier. Now that I changed the tubes the amp sounds much better. When I was considering changing the PUPs in the Tele I got coming I played the Bare Knuckles and came to the conclusion after hearing them through better, clearer tubes that they aren't for me. I'm not saying they're bad, just probably not a good fit for my rig.
Not sure if these are the same as the ones I have but damn they could fetch a hefty price. I'll have to do some more research on them

Apparently, EVH’s taste was trending towards cleaner tones and simpler signal chains, to the point where WVH said his dad “hated” the guitar sounds on the first album.
In my own case, I’ve got 20+ guitars, a ton of pedals, and 2 amps- a Fender HRD 40w 1x12 combo and an Orange TH30 with a 2x12 cab.
Amp #1 is for classic rock, surf instrumentals, jazz, blues, etc. Amp #2 is for stoner rock & metal.
And as you observe, things sound differently depending on what combination of axe, amp & effects you’re running.

Pretty sure I just read the same article not long ago, I cant remember where or exactly when I read it. Think it was an excerpt from an old interview. I believe one of the lasts interviews he did was 2014 but I may be wrong.
This was WVH quoting his dad, more than actual EVH quotes.

I think Im in love!! The white guitar is pretty much the same guitar as the one on the left…but its not…look at the difference in color on the necks. I love the gloss necks. This new white one def needs a set up, nut needs to be filed on the sides as it hangs over the sides of the neck. PUPS are good, might change them but not a necessity now. All she needs is a name, custom pick guard and strap. Oh and I got a set of inline ratios lying around to slap on her. 
My only microphone is a Teac from the 70s that just stands on the desk. Probably not even intended for music. Sorry I can’t help more.
