Is the familiar spell worth taking and is it always a frog

Is the frog outside the hags house her familiar and are these small animals worth talking 2 with a spell?
You get your choice of familiar when you cast it.

If you're a wizard, there's a scroll early in the game that you can add to your spellbook that allows you to summon a quasit as a familiar.

You should be able to choose the kind of familiar you can get when casting the spell. It's a ritual spell that you can cast and then un-prepare, so I think there's literally no downside to taking it. The Crow is quite helpful in combat.

I don't know the exact deal with the frog myself. I made the mistake of talking to it before handling the hag, and the damn frog nearly TPK'd me! Apparently it becomes a lot calmer if you talk to it after dealing with the hag.

You should absolutely speak with every animal that you can find. It's the most amazing addition to the game. You don't necessarily have to learn and cast the spell either, there are multiple ways to get it:
  • Potions of Speak to Animals are plenty, so you can always use those
  • Karlach can learn Speak With Animals for free if you give her the Beastheart (I think that's the name? It's the un-problematised Totem subclass) subclass
  • Wyll can learn Speak With Animals as an invocation
So really, too many options to learn the spell. And it really gives so much more content.

Learning every day. In the game how do you chose a spell as a ritual

It gives you a list, frog, cat, spider, raven, and a few more.

I finally won the fight at the Tollhouse, after nope-ing out of it in my first playthrough - and then had my second ever crash-to-desktop while I was looting in the aftermath. Don't even know if I quicksaved afterwards, and haven't had the will to load up again and find out yet.

Fought the Spectator. They petrified Drow I saved the leader wouldn’t speak to me.
Like I couldn’t click on him. :(. Stupid bugs.

The Spectators eye made the Bullett fight kind of easy.

Rolling along…

He died in my first playthrough. Second time, he was the one who initiated conversation afterwards. He doesn't really say anything that you can't get out of his corpse with a Speak to Dead.
