Yup. Have to sneak past, obscure their vision, run etc.

My suggestion, you stealth or invis one or more people (take potions/scrolls) as you need to get down to the ground floor and go in the back door. You can eventuelly turn them off…. If you have a certain item. And that certain items makes it harder to infiltrate. That tower is a pain…

Right but every time I used it they showed up but way too far away to help (they just aggroed a bunch of goblins who weren't fighting).

I finally managed to get them into a moderately helpful position but they disappear as soon as you drop out of initiative so still meh. Better than having to fight them myself, I guess.

Presumable there’s a trick to it. I haven’t tried the big goblin fight yet, but I’ll let you know if I figure it out.

FYI, on Friday, I did figure out how to get past the gas traps leading to Auntie Ethel, if anyone wants help with that.

I am coming from the underdark. I have no idea what I need in order to get the elevator to work. I assume I need to find the right quest somewhere.

There's no quest for this. This also needs an antimagic flower. Once you get into the tower, go to the opposite side of the room and cast feather fall and jump to the garden below the tower. Then, grab the antimagic flower from the garden and put it into the elevator device in the bottom of the tower (also accessible through the garden). This will fix the elevator and let you get to the higher levels of the tower.

Only attacks that deliver more than a certain amount of damage will actually damage it. Sturdy items also come with a bunch of resistances and even immunities, so make sure to examine it to see what damage type you're best off using against it.

I finally beat it. 3rd try. 9HP left in the portal.

I thought Fog Cloud would keep the portal safe from arrows but nope.

A good helping of fireballs, exploding barrels l,
a daylight spell, and Turn Undeads pulled it off.
That one was a bit touch-and-go, but some Spike Growth and focusing down the faster and ranged opponents won the day.
I love how liquor is an abundant camp supply.

“What’s for dinner?”
“This one sausage we found and these 39 bottle of wine.”
“Woohoo!”
There's even an achievement for taking a long rest using only alcoholic beverages.

Reference to the Portal fight.

Gale, or someone dropping fireball is key.
Shadowheart shooting AoE arrows.
Front line hold at portal.
How I did, dropped a darkness arrow on the portal itself, which prevented it from taking tons of ranged damage in the opening round. Then used hypnotic pattern to take out a massive swarm of the enemies (I also dropped a glyph of warding before the fight started to soften up some of the creatures).
