D&D (2024) Limiting Short Rests to 2x/day

Should Short Rests be artificially limited to 2x/day, potentially allowing for shorter rests?

  • Yes, Short Rests should still be 1-hour, but limited to 2x/day.

  • Yes, Short Rests should be 5-15 minutes and limited to 2x/day.

  • No, Short Rests should still be 1-hour and taken as often as time and circumstances allow.

  • No, Short Rests should be 5-15 minutes and taken as often as time and circumstances allow.

  • Other, (I'll explain in the comments.)

I have toyed with doing short rests like the Cypher System rests, where they require progressively more time the more you take. The idea being that you only need a quick breather to recharge at first, with longer intervals needed later. So your first short rest of the day might only require 5-10 minutes, the next requires 1 hour, the third requires 8 hours and counts as a long rest, resetting the day.

This is, in fact, where I got the idea for my houserule from.

To me the best part of the rule it is finally gives us a consistent platform around short and long rests, which has plagued the edition since its invention.

2 SRs per LR, and they are quick enough that they are generally assumed most of the time (unless the DM wants to do something special and interrupt the party in those quick 5 minutes, which they are certainly entitled to, if they want to shake things up once in a while).

It really helps the monk, really helps the warlock, its so much easier to balance SR classes vs LR ones, it just has so many damn benefits.

That sounds like unlimited Warlock max-level pact slots. A full loadout for every fight.
As everyone should have. and if a full shot one encounter is balanced, a full shot every encounter is still balanced. It only matters if you're trying to grind your players (not characters) down with excessive encounters.
Has that ever come up? If so, did it overshadow the full casters?
Nothing's going to overshadow the divas. The warlock could get a power to straight up eat a foe whole every encounter and the full casters would still be on top.

Make the first short rest in a day 10 or 20 minutes. So at least one will be taken. Keep the rest an hour. You won’t need any additional limits.

In those ages, have there been decent-level warlocks in the group? And if so, how did it impact their power? Getting more max spell slots per day due to quick rests sounds pretty beefy.
We have had monks and warlocks to around 10th-12th.
Get much better flow to game if the PCs are more busy rather than lounging around!

So it sounds like you don't like the attrition of daily resources via multiple encounters a day? Would you prefer that all characters reset their abilities at the same rate?

Other:

All rests are short rests. Except, twice per level, a player can convert a short rest into the benefit of a long rest.

This keeps the math. It ends the requirement of 7 encounters per day.

The flavor is rallying and a deep sense of readiness to face the future.
