D&D (2024) Limiting Short Rests to 2x/day

Should Short Rests be artificially limited to 2x/day, potentially allowing for shorter rests?

  • Yes, Short Rests should still be 1-hour, but limited to 2x/day.

  • Yes, Short Rests should be 5-15 minutes and limited to 2x/day.

  • No, Short Rests should still be 1-hour and taken as often as time and circumstances allow.

  • No, Short Rests should be 5-15 minutes and taken as often as time and circumstances allow.

  • Other, (I'll explain in the comments.)

Note that BG3 does away with using hit dice during a short rest. You just regain half your HP instead. Do also note that a single person can end up controlling the entire party by themselves. I imagine at least some people wouldn't want to bother rolling twenty some die when they short rest.

The 1-hour short rests with no daily limit works fine for me. I think 5-15 minute with no daily limit would be great, but would require halving any per-short-rest resources to maintain the intended usability, since they’re currently intended as every-other-encounter refresh and 5-15 minute short rests would make them an every-encounter refresh.

As for a 2-per-day limit on short rests, it’s not my preference, but it’s no more arbitrary than the current 1-per-day limit on long rests. If need be, just frame it as “you can’t benefit from more than one short rest in a 6-hour period” or something.

Whatever rule will be official in 5.5 there will still be plenty of variants and house rules to adjust the length and the number of short rest.

True, and I still think the tabletop should mandate some time, not instantaneous like the game ... but there is something to the simplicity of BG3 doing away with hit dice and just getting half max HP back.

I once allowed a short rest that only took 10 minutes, but they got only one per day. (The heroes could take as many hour-long short rests that they wanted and could make time for.) Nobody complained.

I'm having a hard time trying to wrap my head around the narrative of limiting Short Rests to twice per day in the TTRPG. Baldur's Gate 3 limits Short Rests to twice per day, and I've seen multiple people make that same suggestion.
5E combat, monster design, and PC resources are all balanced around the idea of an adventuring day being 6-8 medium encounters with 2 short rests and 1 long rest. That’s why BG3 did that.

Yes, short rests should absolutely be limited to no more than 2 per long rest.

No, short rests should not take 1 hour. They should be 5 minutes at most.
