Ten years of 4e edition warring? Forcing out a section of the fandom and then slamming the door behind you so that you can get the type of DnD you want and then man the battlements to make sure those other non-true fans stay out of the hobby all the while doing periodic donuts in the grave of the hated edition?

It’s incredibly effective.

I believe that was "4e D&D isn't D&D"

"D&D isn't a TTRPG" OTOH, that's an unpopular opinion (at least, here at ENWorld, which, we recall, started as a news site for the upcoming, brand-new, 3rd edition of D&D). And, the point? Liberation? Thinking outside the Red Box? trying something new & better... well, less than 45 years old & better? Imagining the hobby without D&D?

What's the point of posting an unpopular opinion, anyway?

I read the bolded text as "then man the battlemats" and was ready to tip my cap to you for it.

I'm confused on the door slamming. Isn't anyone who liked an old edition but not the new one told they can still buy the old books online and play?

I mean you nailed it. Everyone else just forgot this wasn't the "Dogpile on Unpopular Opinions" thread.

How about - "The old legacy ttRPGs are the McDonalds of gaming. The future is now and every time the WotC advertising budget hiccups, more of the current generation will find their way to quality. Meanwhile those who fail their wisdom saves will continue to cling to the past."

I appreciate the (in)validation, but I still really am a cat person. A pile of dogs is most distressing.

You're right. Everyone who said a mean thing about 4e from 2007 through 2012 was entirely in the wrong. They had the games they liked, already.
Next project: Whirled Peas

I remember EN World being a very unpleasant place during that period of time, mostly due to a small group of very vocal 4E fans who would not abide by any criticism of their chosen edition. The idea that WotC knew best, and that 4E was therefore the superior edition, was held to be axiomatic (reports to the contrary have since come out).

That someone from that camp should now go around saying how they've been "forced out" and "had the door slammed behind them" is, quite frankly, egregious.
