It wasn't until 1981 that President Reagan's FTC removed a lot of the regulations surrounding marketing to children on television. Both Flash Gordon and Thundarr were developed in the 70s prior to deregulation and neither one lasted very long. Damn, for only having 21 episodes Thundarr, is remarkably memorable. You're a little bit older than me, so it's possible you were no longer the prime demographic for shows like He-Man, GI Joe, Transformers, etc., etc. once deregulation hit. I know by the time I turned 11 in 1987 I was pretty much out of that demographic myself as I was moving on to big boy stuff like D&D, MTV, sports, and girls. In all honesty, I don’t recall watching many shows with hard merchandizing, nor buying toys that had shows. D&D would be an obvious exception. I also had a big G.I. Joe, but that was years before the cartoon. But I don’t recall toys for Flash Gordon or Thundarr the Barbarian.
I keep on rereading this, and I'm not sure which part of this opinion is supposed to be unpopular. Aside from certain demographics (Karens and adjacent), I bet you'd find a broad swath of the populace agreeing with you.Unpopular opinion: going full Karen on the receptionist at the hospital at 5:15 am is not the amazing look you think it is.
I really wish I could remember which one of my instructors said this: "The idea that communication can solve all problems is a myth."As obvious as it may seem, many don't recognize that disagreement is not always rooted in misunderstanding.
I’m puzzled why though think that these “Western tropes” and WoW analogues that you think 5e leans into with its classes weren’t somehow also present in 4e. Every class you listed in 5e was also in 4e.
If you say so...It was also about presentation, about how the books tried/didnt try, to draw people in. The 4e books vs 5e books on release, are quite different in style right?
I'm trying to find the 4e era art of the party breaking in through a door, that has been referenced negatively as the 'cantina' effect, and then contrast with some of the early 5e art.
There's differences there I would say.
Its not just the classes, its everything in the tone, the style, how it was marketed, all of it.
If you dont think there is, this is the thread for it.If you say so...![]()
Honestly, even the cover of the 4e PH annoyed me. It felt very anime with that ridiculous "sword" the dragonborn was carrying, and it was a yearbook photo pose instead of an action shot.It was also about presentation, about how the books tried/didnt try, to draw people in.
