Unpopular opinion: going full Karen on the receptionist at the hospital at 5:15 am is not the amazing look you think it is.

In all honesty, I don’t recall watching many shows with hard merchandizing, nor buying toys that had shows. D&D would be an obvious exception. I also had a big G.I. Joe, but that was years before the cartoon. But I don’t recall toys for Flash Gordon or Thundarr the Barbarian.

It wasn't until 1981 that President Reagan's FTC removed a lot of the regulations surrounding marketing to children on television. Both Flash Gordon and Thundarr were developed in the 70s prior to deregulation and neither one lasted very long. Damn, for only having 21 episodes Thundarr, is remarkably memorable. You're a little bit older than me, so it's possible you were no longer the prime demographic for shows like He-Man, GI Joe, Transformers, etc., etc. once deregulation hit. I know by the time I turned 11 in 1987 I was pretty much out of that demographic myself as I was moving on to big boy stuff like D&D, MTV, sports, and girls.

I keep on rereading this, and I'm not sure which part of this opinion is supposed to be unpopular. Aside from certain demographics (Karens and adjacent), I bet you'd find a broad swath of the populace agreeing with you.

This is unabashedly aimed at people I can't say this to for reasons: just because I enjoy playing with generative AI tools doesn't mean I don't respect your skills or profession as an artist. I was never going to pay you thousands of dollars to draw everything that comes to my mind. You didn't lose any work from me.

Honestly, even the cover of the 4e PH annoyed me. It felt very anime with that ridiculous "sword" the dragonborn was carrying, and it was a yearbook photo pose instead of an action shot.
