D&D (2024) Bonus Unearthed Arcana Reveals The Bastion System

A 'bonus' Unearthed Arcana playtest document has appeared, and it shows off D&D's upcoming Bastion System.

This October, we’re bringing you a special treat. While we’re continuing to develop and revise public playtesting material for the 2024 Player’s Handbook, we’d thought you’d enjoy an early look at what we’re cooking up for the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide.

The coming Dungeon Master’s Guide will be the biggest of its kind in decades and contain an assortment of new tools for DMs and their tables. In Bastions and Cantrips, we’re showcasing one of these tools, the Bastions subsystem. Dungeon Masters and their parties can use this subsystem to build a home, base of operations, or other significant structure for their characters.

And if you’re raring to test out more character options, we’re also including revisions for 10 cantrips in this playtest packet.

It seems to me, a player can use the Bastion Storehouse at level 5 to create a Pub or an Inn with commerce. Two Storehouses can effectively expand the area and the commerce.

The Storehouse is a great way to implement any skill-oriented, tool-oriented, or background-oriented professional establishment.

The description of the Storehouse needs to spell out this usage more clearly, but all the necessities for this kind of activity is already there.

Note the Workshop at level 5 is for the production of goods. The Storehouse is for the merchandising as well as services. For some concepts having both is great. The Storehouse can be a nightclub with a modest stage for musicians and other performers. A full-on Theater can add on later at level 9.

Maybe "Shop" would be better?

So the current bastion system really encourages you to treat your defenders like hot garbage! I will explain.

You have a barracks which has defenders. Now, you could build an armory, and for a ton of gold you could give your defenders a sliiiiightly better chance of surviving the next attack.

OR....you don't do that, because the attack is a super rare event (and the chance to lose a large amount of defenders near impossible), and just allow your barrack to refresh 4 new guys next week with not a drop of cost. hehe sorry billy the defender, but your not getting the armor upgrade.....timmy down the road is always looking for work if you get killed in a fight.

Hell it gets worse. It costs 1300 gp at the armory to equip my 12 barracks guys. Or, for just 2k gold I upgrade my barracks and get 12 more guys....virtually guarranting I will never run out of defenders and with no ongoing cost.

Wow....crafting a scroll (not buying it, just providing teh supplies) for a 9th level spell is 100,000 gold!!!!!

The warroom is cool. So a super high level character can summon 10000 soldiers and 10 lieutenants to fight for him in 7 days, costing 10,000 gp a day to feed them. That's a neat way to burn high level cash, there's a lot of fun stuff you can do with 10,000 guys!

You might have misread it? Or maybe I am.

The War Room allows you to recruit up to 10 Lieutenants. Each Lieutenant can muster up to 100 guards, or 20 mounted guards, giving you a grand total of 1000 soldiers (costing 1000 GP per day in food), or 200 mounted soldiers (costing 400 GP per day in food). A decent amount, but nowhere near 10,000.

13th Level to have a major Mafia hub that you run. There are some clear career paths here, for Wizards, Clerics, Warriors, and Rogues.
That is the main difference between a Storehouse pub and a hub Pub.

The level-13 Pub comes with the underground connections and the magical beverages.

This high-level Pub can be added to a Storehouse pub later.

hehe I literally did read it right than reread it and convinced myself it was 10,000. Oh well, 1000 flunkies is still something cool I could definately do some shenenagans with.
