D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Yes, they have been working for a while now on something that will be available in a couple of years...? Longterm, large investment with a giant headstart on any potential competition. The reason to go big is so they cannot be easily outmanuvered.
Outmaneuvering them would be just as hard with my approach, the difference is that they do not get one huge surprise at the end, but get some input (and income) along the way

Pros and cons: if they pull this off, the rewards will be very, very high indeed.

that also is true in either case, the difference is only in how fast they get there, and what they have to invest upfront before finding out

Unless you believe you have a window of opportunity that is closing in late 24 or early 25, I see no good reason for the rush

They don't seem to be rushing in particular? They've been at it for a while, and will be for some time.

It's almost like WotC cannot win.

Don't spend money and they get accused of "mothballing" the edition and not spending any money on developing the hobby.

Spend money and they get accused of wasting money and spending too much... :erm:

And people wonder why WotC does not ever directly interact with fans anymore.

having 350+ people working on it is not taking it slow… even so, this makes no real difference to my argument.

I am wondering what is taking them so long however

plenty of people, plenty of opinions, it is impossible to please them all, so if for you winning means ‘everyone is happy with what they are doing, no one has any criticism’ then yes, they cannot win.

I consider that an unrealistic goal / idea however

I don’t think I said anything about wasting money, I only said that their approach is high risk in exchange for an accelerated timeline and wonder whether that is the best approach

And people wonder why WotC does not ever directly interact with fans anymore.
if they cannot handle the fact that not everyone agrees with them, oh well, that is life, get used to it

Also, what is ‘communicate directly’, they release plenty of videos where they talk about all kinds of things, they have their surveys… if you mean ‘in person’, I’d say that is not feasible, at least not in numbers that give you meaningful feedback and not just a few anecdotes

I suspect that Hussar misses the days when WotC staff members would regularly participate directly in ENWorld threads. I do too!
I do. I remember when it was entirely possible to see WotC staffers appear here from time to time to take part in conversations. Watching that well get slowly poisoned was incredibly disappointing.

It's not about pleasing everyone, but, sheesh. It doesn't matter what they do, they are doing it wrong according to someone.
