By 2024, no one will care about BG3 anyway. Anyone who got hyped up about the game will have reached its broken-as-hell third act, where plotlines go to die and the writers affirm that they only have sympathy for white people. Anyone who'd started a second playthrough will realize all the "options" that seem to make the game so deep actually have zero impact on anything, if not outright punishing the player for not roleplaying their background/class in the manner Larian forces them to.

97 on Metacritic tho, who needs games to be finished (or plotlines for non-white non-male main characters to be finished)~

You REALLY need to actually backup everything you just strawebellebelle, because I am in circles that cares about diversity and not being bigoted, and I have heard NOTHING about these sorts of problems with the game. And while I've not finished it, I have seen nothing that indicates Wylls', Karlach or Lae'zel's stories are going to be treated unsympathetically.

Like... as a queer woman... I haven't see anything victimising us either, so unless the game takes a ton of right turns... ?

... also the game very explicitly has Wyll on the cover... ?

Are you sure you aren't talking about Hogwarts Legacy?

Wyll's story is about him being too stupid to think that making a deal with a fiend will have any consequences. (Also should be noted that Wyll has significantly less dialogue than other main party members, with nearly one-third less than Astarion.)

Karlach's story is about her being too stupid to realize she isn't white and male enough deserve a happy ending. Of all the characters, she's the one who doesn't get any chance at a satisfactory ending—because the game is unfinished, and the writers couldn't even halfass her ending. Then the studio head went and called Karlach being destined for death or damnation the ending she "deserves". (It should also be noted that Karlach was originally conceived with African facial features, but then was made more Caucasian-looking, probably because Larian realized it was too overtly racist to have a black-looking woman with a storyline about how she doesn't deserve a chance at a better life after being enslaved.)

Lae'zel's story is about her being too stupid to realize her entire culture is savage and evil and stupid, and the good ending of her storyline is for her to give up entirely on her culture and adopt human society—and like a lot of shoddy fantasy written by white dudes, Larian's writers see humans/elves as "white" people and other races as the "other" (whose entire races are either evil or exist solely to be objectified in victimization).

Also, numerous queer characters exist solely as minor characters to be killed off in side-quests, or as minor villains. The number of queer characters allowed to have any sort of happy ending can be counted on one hand.

You don't hear any sort of this criticism because BG3 stans are rabid and cannot tolerate any criticism of the game, mostly because the fandom consists of angry white men who have their racist and misogynistic fantasies fulfilled by the game and cannot stand being called out on their crap. (For instance, the game pretending it has sympathy for the tieflings while they exist purely to be powerless and victimized and having numerous characters spout out all kinds of anti-immigration dogwhistles, and oh here's a bunch of tieflings who steal from and victimize the people they seek refuge with, etc.)

There's a reason why Larian themselves have said nothing about BG3's sales
most companies do not talk about their sales, nothing surprising here

If an unfinished piece of crap like BG3 can get anywhere near that kind of sales just because it glorifies abusive white men, relishes in victimizing women and queer people, and spouts all the racist and anti-immigration dogwhistles
I haven’t seen any review which essentially said ‘you know, BG3 is a pretty mediocre game, but what makes it great is all the racism and misogyny’… in fact I don’t think anyone even brought that up, so the ‘just because’ is clearly wrong, even if you think it actually includes that

And was depicted in a racist manner. Given that WotC publicly apologized for it, had the artwork replaced (and may have recalled and pulped a bunch of stock - though I may be misremembering that one), I'd submit that would qualify as a disaster.

I think everyone makes mistakes. I know we're all supposed to be perfect and never make a mistake but that's just not a reality and all we can do is try to resolve the issue and learn from it. WOTC changed the artwork and did reprints, presumably at no small cost to them. They implemented new processes to limit chances of it happening again.

But disaster? I think people toss that word around a bit too easily in our eagerness to punish people who screw up. Or I've just been listening to too many Freakonomics Radio podcasts on failure and how we react to it. 🤷‍♂️
