Is this really a superhero movie problem or a more general movie problem? Loads of people invested in improving home entertainment systems during the lockdowns.

I also wonder how much Disney+ hampers Marvel doing so well at the cinema?

If you moderate are a Marvel fan, there is a reasonable chance you have Disney+ and you know the film will be on that in a few months. You are already paying for that, do you really want to spend upwards of £60 to take a family of four to the pictures, when you can wait a few months and watch it in the comfort of your own home.

Lots of overlapping reasons.

Big one is formulaic movies are played out. People less tolerant of meh movies that are paint by numbers.

Things like Barbie, Mario etc are the big hits.

Super hero movies have been in decline fir a while, DC in particular but I would argue Love and Thunder was the one that did the damage.

GotG was an exception but it's really the last phase 3 movie.

No press tour is a poor excuse (my opinion). The announcement alone should spark interest. Positive reviews etc. I didn’t care that Tom cruise was on a press tour for top gun or etc.

A trailer dropped tonight for rebel moon on Netflix. Could be a total disaster of a movie but it looks way better than any post endgame movies other than guardians. There’s no press tour for this

If Taylor swift announced tonight that she has a cameo in the marvels end credits I bet it doubles it’s turnout the following weekend

It’s hard to accept that’s this just isn’t good for the money invested
Press tours exist, and studios write them into actors' contracts, simply because they do have an effect on the box office.

YS and Tulsa King are awful. Do you really think Marvel needs geriatric leads? It’s popular because they leaned into current “used to be rancher” American fad right now. Just tons of filler like Sons of Anarchy on horses. Crap people watch because P+ has so little to offer. That’s not even to mention how far away from the supers genre these shows are.
That is certainly... a take.

The movies and tv shows that marvel is making other than guardians have been terrible since endgame

This is a movie with 3 female lead and it’s bombing with women while Barbie set records

Stranger things is a well acted show and every season has been very popular. Personally I would watch it again over

Yellowstone-older actor taking show to award winning. Strong female lead. Same director now takes a 75 year old has been actor and show has been renewed for season 2

Please tell me why not good ideas. Stranger things has a super hero and probably would make a ton of money plus weren’t the directors approached for Star Wars
These are really terrible suggestions for the reasons @payn outlines.

That is certainly... a take.
Is he wrong about any of it? Do you think Marvel needs 70+ y/o characters? Is that going to improve things? Is targeting people who miss Dynasty the future for Marvel? I've watched Yellowstone and it is not good, despite Kevin. It's just one of these blathery family sagas and they're for a very certain audience with almost zero crossover with the people who watched Endgame in cinemas (I'm sure there were a few late 40s and older who did, but we're talking single-digit percent).

The theater we saw Marvels in this weekend is one we've used before that lets you reserve seats. The seats are really comfortable and reclining and the tickets aren't too expensive. Unfortunately the 1:00 shown didn't start until 1:30 because of the commercials before the previews and that let me realize how bright the exit floor lights were, that the screen wasn't that big, and that our sound system at home is pretty nice. I think even with 20 minutes instead of 30 and $2 more we might have been fine. This was just stupid.

One problem is the spending. Movies have had crazy budgets for a while now (as well as tv shows, good god the spending on shows like House of the Dragon or Wheel of Time), and I think its time to reign that in. Whether its the declining box office, or the simple fact taht big budget require safe investments, and at some point you have to innovate to keep your client base engaged. I think its time to bring back the mid budget movie suite.

Unfortunately, at this point, mid-budget is in the tens of millions, perhaps into the 100 million range. Small budget and indie production budgets are in the single digit millions. Maybe up to 10 million.
