The best way to do Psionics is treat them just like spells, but put no limits on memorization. Instead there is a cumulative percentage chance with each casting (equal to the psionic ability's level) that your head explodes during the casting (and this chance resets to zero after a full night's sleep). So a 1st level psionic ablity would be a 1% chance, but if you cast another 1st level psionic ability or the same one, you then have a 2% chance. If you followed that up with an 8th level psionic ability you would have a 10% chance of your head exploding.

Nah.

Yes this as well, as "spells", but without the head exploding from the scanners film :)

If we do this for psioncs, the head exploding thing, then the magical spells would require some sort of % check where you could cause a tear in reality and then fiends would start pouring through or some sort of dogma of reality being insulted and there would be side-effects depending on how much reality was changed.

Its kind of funny but silly, so no heads exploding or reality imploding because of a spells and powers.

I don't know if folks are familiar with Conspiracy X, but the first edition rules for psionics were kind of my ideal. The DM would draw cards from a Zener deck and the player guessed which ones were pulled, which determines if the power usage was successful, and how powerful if so.

Depending on the difficulty of the power (Devotion vs. Science vs. Super Science), the DM would pull a different number of cards from the Zener deck, and the stronger the psionicist (wild talent/low-level/high-level), they would get an increased number of guesses.

If no cards are guessed, the power would fail; the more cards successfully guessed, the power powerful the effect. I just haven't figured out how botches would trigger.

The most important thing regarding fixing psionics in a 2e edition Dark Sun game would be to not make them more complex mechanically, they can be different of course, or time consuming than other forms of magic. So you would have the benefits of fixing the psionic system without having created more problems or more complexities, thus a waste of time. It will be fun and it will work.

Psionics can have a vancian system and the mobility and flexibility of let us say a spell/power points system. As that can be attained by giving the psionicist the capacity to cast/manifest a number of extra powers per day of any level other than the highest one he has access to, except for the 1st level in which he will be able to.

A crude and simple example.
So if a mage can cast 3/3/2 per day a psionicist could manifest 3/3/2 +3 of levels 1 or 2 (in any combination or level choice).

If heads aren’t exploding, it’s just witchcraft with fiddle mechanics

these are both great, one is funny and the randomness of the other exciting as it brings some suspense, for conventional board games but in and rpg they would be a problem. Our psionicist just exploded his head and we have bits and pieces of his brain and skull all over the place and the other one just is too unstable, even if functional.
