D&D General How do you think each alignment would handle this?

I once basically got accused of doing this lol.

I was at the small-store version of a big supermarket in the UK (I think a Sainsbury's), and I was doing the usual post-work shopping on the way home, picked up some milk which had an attractive new bottle, went to the counter, and they rang everything up except the milk, which they couldn't get to ring up, got the manager to come and help (as one does), then the manager (who must have been like, all of 23, and clearly with serious social issues, god knows how he got the position), looks at the milk like its the devil, and starts going on a rant about how they don't stock that kind of milk, they never have, and starts trying to quiz me about what kind of trickery or scam I'm trying to pull here, and then even threatened to call the police, before I think realizing what he'd just said and that he'd lost his mind and just going and getting a different 4-pint of semi-skimmed. I'm still mystified to this day as to how I'd have scammed them by buying milk. If I was returning it for sure.

The man tells him he has a 50 dollar bill, but the manager would have to make change and was now uncomfortable opening the safe with this man in the vicinity. Finally, manager ask the man to leave or they will call security. Man asks the manger to go ahead and call them.

Security arrives and ask about the situation. Manager explains what happened to him. Security asks why somebody would "fake a 2 dollar bill of all things?" It finally donned on the security that this manager was unaware a 2 dollar bill even existed. To the managers credit, he gave the man a taco and drink on the house for his ignorance on the issue.

I have to admit I didn't know 2-dollar bills existed until my 30s, and even then only as trivia. In the UK we sometimes have inexperienced cashiers try to refuse Scottish money - it's pounds and normally widely accepted, but a lot of younger people who don't have Scottish relatives have never seen one before they start as a cashier, and it really does look super-fake next to a normal note (I hear Northern Ireland has its own notes too but I've never actually seen one myself).

I’ve carried one in my wallet since I was a teenager. Kind of as a lucky charm.

And a (obviously) fake Million dollar bill just to see people gasp for a moment when I want make a cashier laugh.

I recall a story where a young cashier got taken by a convincing fake with a fatal flaw. The hundred dollar bill the man paid with had George W. Bush on it. Kid thought it was legit.

On mine the Pres (Clinton I think) is making a goofy face and the back is blank aside from "One Million Dollars" written on it in bold text.

I never got the GWB story from the cashier but the manager hung it up on the wall of shame. I will say it was some very impressive work. The face was a serious pose and more importantly the bill looked legit and even felt right for currency. It could have been a simple oversight that the kid didnt even look at the picture just saw what for all intents and purposes looked like a hundo bill.

I live in the upper midwest and occasionally Canadian coins sneak into our change. I was visiting Arizona and paid the exact amount, not paying any attention to the fact that I had a Canadian dime. The cashier looked at me like I was trying to rob her at gunpoint ... over a dime. I explained what it was, but had to dig around for an American dime. Like I would try to cheat the store out of a whole 10 cents.

Basic Human Fighter (or whatever) is in a local store sees an obviously poor man steal something.

How would each of the alignment's react in your opinion?

With the assumption that such theft is morally "wrong":

LG - Catches up to the poor man, asks him to return what he stole or see if he can work for the items. If not the poor man must return the items or face the consequences (assuming these fall within morally "good" guidelines).
NG - Looks around the store to decide if the owner can afford the theft. If yes, he does nothing. If not, he pays for the items if he can. If he has time, he follows and observes the poor man to decide if he might be able to help.
CG - Follows the poor man and observes him to decide if he can help.

LN - Stops the poor man and request he return what was stolen or face the consequences of the law.
TN - Looks around the store, decides if he things the owner can afford the theft. If so, he does nothing. If not, he might catch up to the poor man and suggest maybe he would work off the items stolen if he needs them. Otherwise he should return them. If the man won't work for them or return them, he tells the store owner of the theft, but leaves catching the poor man up to others.
CN - Shrugs and continues shopping for whatever he is there for.

LE - Apprehends the poor man so he can be punished, or has the poor man serve him in exchange for his freedom.
NE - Follows the poor man and takes whatever he stole.
CE - Takes other things for himself, and blames it all on the poor man.

How would each of the alignment's react in your opinion?

LG: Arrests the offender if he has the authority to do so, otherwise assists in apprehending the offender to the extent allowed by law. Visits the offender in prison or otherwise attempts to take personal responsibility for reforming the individual and getting them back on track in life. Will oppose unjustly harsh prosecution of the offender and could - depending on whether he trusts his society is just according to his beliefs - attempt to shield the offender from prosecution if he can convince the offender to reform.

NG: Attempts to pay for what the offender has stolen. Attempts to prevent prosecution of the offender if he can, but personally attempts to take steps to see that the offender knows they are guilty and in need of reform. Attempts to alleviate the root cause of the offense through charity and providing for a legitimate source of income.

May or may not support prosecution of the individual based on an assessment of how fair and mercifully he believes the law of society to be, and his own personal relationship with the perpetrator and the victim, but will certainly shield the offender from any punishment they feel is excessive. May or may not attempt personal restitution with the victim depending on his assessment of their character.

LN: Arrests the offender if he has the authority to do so, otherwise assists in apprehending the offender to the extent required by law. Duty is discharged, and it's not worth thinking about after that.

TN: Doesn't get involved. This is someone else's problem and nothing good comes from getting involved in other people's problems.

CN: Watches indifferently unless the shop owner is a friend. May steal something if he's also in need and thinks the shop keeper deserves it.

LE: Violently takes down the offender if they have the legal authority to do so. If the offender is not dead, reserves time to watch them tortured, mutilated or hanged as provided for by the law both as a good citizen and so that everyone will know they participated in riding society of this weak and dishonorable member.

NE: Just wants to watch the world burn. Decides what course of action results in the greatest harm and does that. Might aid in the theft. Might decide he enjoys watching this person get his hands cut off or hung, and so stop the theft. Whatever causes the most pain and suffering and thus amusement.

CE: Unless the shop owner is a close friend, doesn't stop the crime. May decide that if the shop keeper is that stupid and inattentive, they might as well help themselves as well. Might also decide that the thief is worth following, to shake down and blackmail if they prove weak, or to get information from if they prove strong.

LG - Stop and get the poor man arrested. Pat themselves on the back about how great it was to ruin the guy's life further in service to the 'proper order' that put him in such a situation.

NG - Follow the guy out, give him some coin so he doesn't have to keep doing this. Then go back and pay for the goods.

CG - Actively distract the shop keep so the poor man can get away, then buy more food to give to his family and community.

LN - Stop and get the poor man arrested. Be actively smug about how great it was to ruin the guy's life further in service to the 'proper order' that put him in such a situation.

TN - Ignore him. None of this is your concern.

CN - Wait... the security here's that bad? I need some rations for the road too so...

LE - Follow him out, mug him for the stolen goods. Then report him to the guards to make sure he's put in his place, the dirty criminal. Justify it the same way all the other Lawful types do, only you're being honest.

NE - Snitch to a guard you know for a reward.

CE - Shout to get him arrested, loot the place while everyone's distracted.
