It's entirely possible someone at Modiphius just loves the intellectual property and was chomping at the bit to make the game. I tend to believe that of any company that makes use of older or less popular intellectual property to produce a game.
 

I think heroes 3 was the best received and amongst my old fart friends is the one we love/play the most, and the same with others, hence the boardgame.
The M&M RPG computer games has its own rules so not compatible with 2d20.
I am interested/intrigued.
 





Heroes of Might and Magic 3 still has a huge community around it, a lot centered around modding - Horn of the Abyss is, in my opinion, so excellent it essentially can be treated as a fourth official expansion to the game and the closest to a modern release.

It is not surprising that they decided that making an RPG based on the subseries would be the best move, considering how active the community is.
 

It's a very strange situation because pretty much all the Heroes of MM games after III have been awful (the last new one was almost 10 years ago), and the success of III (and I and II) pretty much killed off the CRPG (although you could also blame the transition to 3d)
