It's amazing to me that people are wringing their hands over Gary Gygax, but I can't find a thread on Neil Gaiman in the media subforum, or anywhere else.

Or the more cynical me isn't actually amazed, sadly.
I thought I first heard about it here. Maybe that was on Twitter.

To be fair, it's been an eventful two weeks, to put it mildly.

Amanda Palmer has suggested that there's well over a dozen women who have come to her with complaints, so this scandal is likely just getting started. And Gaiman's podcast about it didn't help, and if anything seemed to confirm at least inappropriate sexual harassment of young girls that worked for him. If not worse.

But nobody's talking about that because Gary Gygax said something that offended literally nobody at the time, but over forty years later is controversial. Even if you're NOW offended by Gygax, that still seems like a strange prioritization of things to be concerned about.

I brought it up obliquely here (surprised I hadn't seen it anywhere in my usual social media haunts until three days in).

Hadn't seen the part where Palmer suggested there were a lot more.

Personally I like to wait until things are solidified before opining. In any case, even his side sounds bad now from what little I've read.

In fairness, I hadn't heard about it until I just googled it.

As for why we are talking about Gygax, that's pretty simple. Because ... this is a TTRPG forum, where we talk about TTRPGs in general, and D&D (a lot). Moreover, this came up due to the recent publication of a book which recounted historical fact, and people that pushed back against that.

Oh, it's bad. In the comic book spaces I'm in, people are talking about it with despair.

You should read what you're talking about. Gygax is responding to people at the time who were offended by him.

You do know this is a D&D news site, not a comic book news site, right?

People are talking about Gygax over Gaiman here because this is a gaming forum. Trust that in the wider public sphere, more people have heard of Neil Gaiman by an order of magnitudes and I am sure the grist mill will start grinding away on this story soon enough. It's all ugly.

I think it's because this is a DnD forum and less of a book forum. In honest I had to look him up because I disn't know who that was. Seeing he wrote books I didn't remember reading any of them, turns out I never did. I recognized one which is Coraline, but that's because of the movie and less of the book. Regardless, people are talking about Gary here because this is a DnD forum. I'm pretty sure that what's going on with Gaiman will be talked about in the spheres he's associated with and the cases will be reported on if they are pressed.
