For me, that book would have to be Level Up's Adventurer's Guide. But any book that helps build a great character concept has my interest.

a book is not the same as the 2024 PHB (the book that was very clearly the only one referred to here)If there is a book that has great backgrounds and a great system for backgrounds, that is a reason for me to buy the book.
Actually, the backgrounds and the way abilities decouple from the species, is one of the reasons I am enthusiastically upgrading to 2024.a book is not the same as the 2024 PHB (the book that was very clearly the only one referred to here)
2024 Backgrounds don't have any 'abilities' besides the feats, two skills, one tool and one language. The background abilities by themselves are worth three background feats, plus there is the free feat, plus the two skills, one toolset, and three languages: the entire background is worth about five background feats.
It is about 3.5 feats2024 Backgrounds don't have any 'abilities' besides the feats, two skills, one tool and one language.
There's no way that equals "five feats"
Pathfinder 2nd edition and Level Up did this well before D&D got around to doing it for 2024 D&D. The latter is late to the party.Actually, the backgrounds and the way abilities decouple from the species, is one of the reasons I am enthusiastically upgrading to 2024.
I like backgrounds as a player, as a design space to build a character concept.
As DM, I plan on creating backgrounds to do much of the heavy lifting for worldbuilding cultures.
A great system for backgrounds matters alot.
A feat, plus another feat that grants two skills plus a tool (slightly less valuable than Skilled (with three skills) and a language (which are essentially useless in 2024).It is about 3.5 feats
2024 backgrounds do have abilities. For example, in the UA playtest, Sailor comes with +2 Strength and +1 Constitution. We havent seen the official 2024 backgrounds yet, but we know each background comes with three abilities. A player can have +2 any and +1 any other, or +1 to all three.2024 Backgrounds don't have any 'abilities' besides the feats, two skills, one tool and one language.

Ah, so 2 1/2 "regular" feats, then. Yeah, that's about right.2024 backgrounds do have abilities. For example, in the UA playtest, Sailor comes with +2 Strength and +1 Constitution. We havent seen the official 2024 backgrounds yet, but we know each background comes with three abilities. A player can have +2 any and +1 any other, or +1 to all three.
Altogether, each 2024 background is worth about five background feats.
(Note, a general feat at level 4 is worth about two background feats.)
I am counting two skills, one toolset, and three languages as worth about one background feat. The languages are negligible but need to be gated.
