Walking out into the open ended stealth before, so why do you think it's not RAI to do it now?
What @borringman said.

If RAI was for it to work like in 2014, they could have just left it like that. Instead, they re-wrote the rule, in a way that seems to suggest hiding makes you invisible until someone finds you with a successful perception check. The RAW seems clear to me, and I see no reason to suspect it isn’t also RAI. It’s just incredibly stupid RAW/RAI.

If your intent was to ambush, you would have 'Surprise' and get advantage on your initative roll (and possibly start combat with the Invisible condition
so exactly what I gain from the invisible condition, in other words hiding outside of combat is indistinguishable from the Hide action

Except that hiding in combat requires a minimum DC15 Stealth check to succeed (the specific rule in combat trumps the general rule of how DCs are set outside of combat). That is not a requirement outside of combat.

I expect that's what the "enemy finds you" line is supposed to be. You walk out in the open and they find you.

They just didn't think "oh wait, they can't because you're invisible".

Of course you can. Doing so may initiatie combat, and then be governed by the rules of combat, otherwise they would be adjucated by the DM.
they are combat actions. Can’t do combat actions outside combat was your position.

Well I suppose someone can cast detect invisibility or some such.

But once they do. . . then everyone can suddenly see you? No communication or countermeasure needed? Because it says that ends the condition entirely.

The new PHB, regarding Hiding, says "The Dungeon Master decides when circumstances are appropriate for hiding." They kept it loose. I believe they are using the word "invisible" as a synonym for "not visible," rather than "you turn translucent."
