D&D (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

Feels like you'd run into the "ending a turn in the same square" rule. Possibly being able to prone them for free.
yeah, I expect them to be in the same square, to me you cannot grapple someone in an adjacent square.

That rule is more about fighting one another, then you cannot really occupy the same space as someone else, when grappling that is required however. You cannot really grapple someone who keeps you at arms length

One thing I'd really like to know is why they got rid of opposed checks / contests. I liked those, and I don't see what the problem there was. I think a contest is a better representation of something like grappling than a save DC anyway. Why should the grappler get an automatic "this is how hard it is for you to avoid being grappled by me" mechanic?

That being said, I agree with whoever said upthread that the mechanic should really be "grabbed" not "grappled".

They got rid of them because the d20 is too big a spread, and 5E has decided to basically remove the benefits of training, because god forbid a first level pud not have a decent chance of hitting Orcus. So you'd have 8 strength wieners routinely escaping grapples by 20+ strength grapplers just because the grappler rolled poorly.

Not just that, but also the jacked grapple builds of Rogues and Bards, who could grapple significantly above their weight class just because they're "experts" and most monsters are "untrained" in athletics, even when it makes sense for them to be good at it.

Still curious how you find 200' walls.

If you built for grappling this would rarely happen in 5E IME.

The grappler build I made was sporting a +11 athletics at level 5 and usually had advantage on athletics checks (Custom Lineage Rune Knight 4/Rogue 1).

I think the opposite is actually more true. If you built a character for grappling in 5E they very rarely lose a Grapple check. At higher levels the character I mentioned above routinely grappled Giants and Dragons and they never broke out of it that I recall.

Now if you are just some random fighter with a 20 strength and athletics proficiency who did not focus on that, sure you lost sometimes. Not a lot I don't think.
