I thought that too, until I read the new PHB. It mentions Dark Sun conspicuously, along with the other published settings. It's the only setting mentioned in the PHB that has not been published yet
It doesn't have a chapter in the upcoming Worlds & Realms, but I wonder if it will get some mention in there. I think they will do something with it longterm.

If it were me, or if I were to pitch a book, I'd go for Adventurers From Across the Multiverse. It'd be more or less a PH2, but I'd use different settings as chapters. Maybe a generic chapter for a bunch of subclasses that are missing. Eberron would then have the Artificer, Dragonmarks, Changeling, Warforged, Kalashtar and Shifters. Dark Sun for Psionics and Thri-kreen. Bloomburrow for Animalfolk.

It's certainly surprising that they haven't done so until now. Hopefully they'll do so now, rather than reissuing Strahd and Dragon Heist, etc., instead.
I think the whole point of backwards compatibility is to avoid reissuing Strahd & Dragon Heist, so I think we're good on that score.

Definitely doubling down on the IP will be something we see going forward. We will always be free to make our own worlds, but they need to build the brand - using everything they've got and adding more to it is what I would expect to see.

I really think Setting Guides are in the cards this time around.

Hasbro wants D&D to be a family-friendly brand, and here Dark Sun is a little taboo. A little return to the Athasian Tablelands is possible, but respeting those boundaries. Other reason is because DS was designed to exclude certain crunch elements, and this is against the current philosophy or mentality by WotC team. This wants you can add to your "Athasian" campaign every new crunch element you wanted. The 5ed DS should be rebooted to can include the maenads, xephs, dromites, elans and other PC species.

Now I am thinking if Witchlight was a (mini?)setting, here the ardlings would be perfect as new PC specie.

Councyl of Wyrms 5ed? I love the idea, but there are no clue about monster classes. If players could be chromatic or metalic dragons, others could ask to can play with other types: lungs, gems..

Now they can't sell a new Manual of the Planes if this is only rewritten lore. Players don't want to spend the money to read again something written in the fandom wiki. WotC wants to sell mainly crunch.
