Heroes of the Borderlands

D&D (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Return expanded just about every aspect of the adventure, adding more to the original. That is additive and an improvement.
you could also say that it is a completely different adventure (it takes place years later, but in the same location) that cashed in on the 25th anniversary and only used the name for a quick cash grab. That is my problem with the distinction you are trying to make, there is no clear line that separates the two.

I admit I don't know what they're planning to do with the starter, but given the premise of KotB (wildly out of step with WotC's current design parameters) and the IMO meager but still annoying changes made to create 5.5 as just enough of a new edition that you buy $150+ worth of replacement books, I simply have no faith in WotC's desire to trade on KotB in a way that's not simply a nostalgia-fueled cash grab.
and that to me is the real underlying distinction, your perspective of the company producing the modules then vs now

Is there something in the press-release (or whatever it is that's being talked about here) that indicates the adventure is set in Greyhawk? The OP seems to say the setting is "the Borderlands", same as the original module. It's described (in B2) as an area on the borders of "the Realm" which is surrounded by "the forces of Chaos". This most strongly resembles the setting of Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson from which, I believe, it was cribbed.
I didn't see anything that suggested a Setting: likely it will be presented as being able to plug into Hreyhawk, FR, probsvly other Settinfs, and honebrew.

The Realm, eh? My bug suspicion suspicions that theybare bringing Venger into the Keep on the Borderlands plot...

This would be why I associate it with Greyhawk

Absolutely. I apologize if that wasn't clear. I don't expect WotC to do better.

And the novels?

And who is releasing this book?
I wouldn't expect an out of print novel to influence a new Starter Set rewrite of a Setting-neutral module from the early 80's. WotC is more likely to keep it neutral, and have a note in the book providing Setting suggestions (I predict it will suggest the canon Greyhawk and Mystara locations, and FR and Eberron), just as Quests from the Infinite Staircase does.

Nothing in this announcement mentioned a specific Setting.
