The box is set in a place called The Borderlands, taking players to three settings--the Keep on the Borderlands, the wilderness, and the Caves of Chaos.

"Heroes of the Borderlands (working title) makes it easy to start playing D&D in minutes with a quick-start guide; intuitive, component-centric character creation; and a modular, introductory adventure. It reimagines B2: The Keep on the Borderlands—a classic introductory D&D adventure—for use with this boxed set by splitting the adventure into three self-contained booklets: the Caves of Chaos, the Keep on the Borderlands, and the Wilderness. Each booklet includes a short tutorial to help new and returning players learn as they go. A how-to-play video will also accompany the release."

It intrigues me that Greyhawk is getting the core and starter feature while the Realms get a two-book set.

That's more dual setting support than 5e has ever had
Keep on the Borderlands was technically sort of Mystara originally, despite being Gygax.

A few things go into the Greyhawk core, Forgotten Realms expansion strategy:

  • Greyhawk can fit entirely into the DMG without squishing anything
  • Additionally, Greyhawk doesn't need a lot of expansion, because it is historically sparsely detailed by design
  • The Forgotten Realms has volumes of historical detail, which makes it perfect for a "Generic D&D" expansion product, with details and options that can be used for Greyhawk or homebrew just as easily.
