D&D (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

D&D Beyond has announced how the transition to the new 2024 edition will work on the platform, and how legacy access to the 2014 version of D&D will be implemented.
  • You will still be able to access the 2014 Basic Rules and core rulebooks.
  • You will still be able to make characters using the 2014 Player's Handbook.
  • Existing home-brew content will not be impacted.
  • These 2014 rules will be accessible and will be marked with a 'legacy' badge: classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, feats, monsters.
  • Tooltips will reflect the 2024 rules.
  • Monster stat blocks will be updated to 2024.
  • There will be terminology changes (Heroic Inspiration, Species, etc.)

yes, but why would I not also get the other stuff they are doing with the new books? Why would they not improve organization etc.
There is no money in reprinting the 2014 PHB with new art.

It would cause the tiniest blip in sales to collectors then slide back to the curve the PHB is currently going.

I already have 3 2014 PHBs. I don't need a 4th. I didn't even want 3. Many people don't need a 2nd if they brought one that didn't have the terrible 1st run binding.

... No? A5e and ToV were created AFTER DnD 5e, to specifically be compatible with them.
not sure how that makes it a no.... of course they were created after it, the standard I am referring to is the 5e SRD, D&D, A5e and ToV are all implementations of that 'standard', just like HDs and computers support the SATA standard to be interoperable.

WoTC didn't make a game compatible with someone else's product.
no, but they released an SRD, thereby creating that standard. Compare to 4e for the difference of not having one

add better organization, clearer rules, etc. and that might change... again why do you insist on creating something that you expect to fail instead of something that might work. Sounds like a self fulfilling prophecy rather than an actual possibility of what WotC would have done alternatively

Better organization and clearer rules of the 2014 version of the game is not a seller.

guess we will never know ;) Personally I like the 2024 books no better than a hypothetical reorganized and cleaned up 2014

I agree they would result in fewer resales (not sure by how much though), but presumably the goal is a refresh for new players more than that anyway

I don't think the 2024 version is that more complex or harder for new players.

The easy races and class are still easy. And the backgrounds come with the feat. And the subclasses are all pushed out of level 1.

Again to a new player They don't know the difference between the 2024 version and a 2014. So a refresh would solely be for the old-time players who already have the book.

Is there in lies the problem. No corporation is going to go on a full campaign to sell a book to someone who already has that same exact book.

better organization, clearer language, some cleanup, new art? I am just as likely to spend money on that as the 2024 book, maybe even moreso, I do not really like the 2024 direction all that much…
That's rather vague. Let's set some parameters.

The "Revised" Players Handbook contains the following:

  • All Species get MotM treatment (floating ASI, extra language, etc). No new or removed species.
  • Classes get the variant options from Tasha standard. A few sore spots are addressed:
Monk damage starts at a d6
Sorcerers get extra spells known via subclasses
Twin Spell cost doubled
Paladins can only smite 1/ round
Druid Temp HP from wild shape limited to 3x druid level.
  • Backgrounds give a free feat. Options are Tough, Skilled, Magic Initiate, Lucky, and new ones (Crafter, Musician)
  • Conjure spells just replaced with Tasha summon spell mechanics.
  • General tweaks to change short rest refresh to proficiency/per day and choosing you caster stat for feats and species.
  • Some spells get rebalanced
No new subclasses, spells, or feats beyond a few new background feats
Pretty art
Terminology changes to remove offense or outdated words
$55 95.

I opted for the fewest changes I could make to bring the PHB up to Tasha/MotM and later supplements. Only the biggest pain points are addressed and plenty of them would probably remain untouched. There is no fix for elements monk or moon druid, beastmaster gets the Tasha fix, sharpshooter and GWM go though untouched. Good choices remain good, bad choices mostly stay bad or get minor tweaks to make them less awful.

realistically speaking it has the same chances of me picking it up as the 2024 books, if I get them it is for art and organization, the rest does not make a difference.
