D&D (2024) PHB 2024 Is Hilariously Broken. Most OP of All Time?

The change to take out the word "hostile" and instead leave who to attack to the discretion of the attacker makes complete sense. War Caster making spell OAs makes sense (although I thought they'd changed something there).

It's a not following consequences bug. One I plan to treat with a rolled up newspaper; opportunity attacks must meaningfully be attacks.

On the topic of monks and Nick: Based on the fact that their starting weapon proficiencies have changed to all simple weapons and all martial weapons with the Light property (instead of short swords only), I would argue that monks being able to benefit from Nick via the Weapon Mastery feat or via multiclassing is intentional. (Just as intentional as making it so you can't use any weapon masteries with Unarmed Strikes.)

Thanks for clarifying. I don't see it as a mistake. I think it's deliberate. That being said, everyone is welcome to disallow it.

Nystul's Magic Aura to change a creature type to "humaniod".
Magic Jar to take control of it's body.

Possibly a Hold Person or Suggestion in the middle to make it go along with your plan.

Definitely takes some setup.

This argument was hashed out on another thread. Basically fast hands lets you use a magic item that requires an action. If casting a spell requires an action, the scroll qualifies.

On the other hand the there is no action associated with using the scroll as an object. There's a casting time associated to the spell, but you're just casting a spell at that point. The fact that the spell's requirements (spell slot, material component) were met when the spell was put into the scroll doesn't change that the PC has to be able to cast the spell in the first place.

In any case I rule that fast hands doesn't work with a spell scroll (it may or may not work with some wands, we don't know how that's going to be worded). D&D (2024) - Thief Rogue / True Strike.

Just want to address the OP's list directly here:


I am fairly certain this change is deliberate, and I'm not entirely sure why it's considered OP. How is using your reaction to cast cure wounds on an ally more OP than using your reaction to cast inflict wounds on an enemy?


Personally I wouldn't allow someone to drag another creature through something like spike growth without going through it themselves. The word "drag" implies that you are pulling the person behind you, not pushing/pulling them along bside you.

The changes to spirit guardians are more concerning to me. I have discussed them previously. I'm inclined to rule that the spell can only affect each enemy once per round.


Yeah, this one is a problem and needs to be fixed, but as I said above, I think WotC has put it in their "wait and see if it's actually a problem at the table or not" basket.

Cure wounds lol. Start thinking about haste, polymorph, fly, greater invisibility etc.

I'll get back to you on the Kraken still crunching it out.

Grappler and spice growth. Easier to imagine on a grid. They're in it you are not. Drag them back and forth along the edge of the spell. Think cheese grater your foe is the cheese.

Yeah, and pretty iffy. Nystul's Magic Aura only works on a willing creature, so you'd have to somehow convince the kraken to let you disguise it as a humanoid first. It's also a touch spell. And unless you are able to cast it on the kraken every day for a month, then it's only going to last 24 hours (after which the kraken no longer counts as a humanoid).

If you then cast magic jar, the kraken gets a Charisma save to resist being possessed. Going by the 2014 kraken stats (since we don't have the 2024 version yet), while Charisma is its weakest save, it still has a +5 to the roll. For some reason, krakens get legendary actions but not legendary resistance.

So yeah - I think this would be pretty difficult to pull off.

Still doesn't seem OP to me. Plus it makes some sense. If you can learn to cast offensive spells as a reaction, why can't you learn to cast buff spells as a reaction too?

I would still rule that you can't do that. You can't drag someone next to you. You've got to go first, and they follow behind. So they would only take spike growth damage if you also take it first.

You need to go higher to get it working well , especially as it requires a full turn of setup.

Quicken: CME (7th level)
Action: attack + Eldritch Blast (4)
Action Surge: attack + Eldritch Blast (4)
= 10 attacks for 1d10+5+8d10
= 545 damage * accuracy

Run past an ally who has Warcaster and Haste, and somehow get advantage (Foresight), and you can kill basically anything without a specific counter (like Terrasque).


No setup round needed.

And you still have 9 minutes 54 seconds left to kill anything else you can reach.

That is not 100% correct, but that was a big reason yes. That is also why I said the 2024 monsters will not be 2x as powerful. They are likely to be precisely what they said they would be (and the previews have supported).
