RESPECT FOR PLAYERS
Your players need to know from the start that you'll run a game that is fun, fair, and tailored for them, that you'll allow each of them to contribute to the story, and that you'll pay attention to them when they take their turns. Your player also count on you to make sure an adventures threats dont target them personally. Never make players feel uncomfortable or threatened.

RESPECT FOR THE DM
As the DM, you have the right to expect your players to respect you and the effort you put into making a fun game for everyone. The players need to let you direct the campaign (with their input), arbitrate the rules, and settle arguments. And when your narrating the action of the game, the players should be paying attention.

Man, I have a few house rules when it comes to exactly this sort of thing, and I play with strangers ALL THE TIME.

All you gotta do is say, "These are the things that I like to do slightly differently than what you're used to..." And share.

That works the other way, too - I've had players show up to my game and try to use Flanking, as if it's a standard regular 5e rule, and I simply tell them, "I don't use that rule, sorry!"

I've never had any trouble with them.

Teach them!
Tou also tend to say that you don't see most of the issues commonly raised as problems others see.

Did you consider the possibility that your houserules might be minor or that the houserules some number of others find important are significant in ways that make it difficult to seamlessly convey in ways that others will quickly grok?

But
In fact, RAW, it's the DM who "rolls on the Bastions table" to say what happens on a "Bastion Turn".
But doesn't that happen only if PC is away from the bastion and cannot contact it through means like Sending spell? That was the impression I was getting. In fact some videos from people makign early reviews of the DMG outright say that if you remember to cast sending every week, DM never gets to roll on Bastion turn.

That seems boring if true. Are the bastion events all negative though?

If by others, you mean YOU and a couple of others here, then yes, that's true.

(And I mean that with all love, I honestly enjoy trying to figure out what you're talking about, and I think that you have something important to say, even if I miss what it is much of the time).

I mean, it's obviously possible, but the conversation was generally about the 2014 "Gritty Rest" rules and that sort of thing, which are exceedingly simple to explain to other people. They weren't talking about a long list of house rules! Or if they were, then they didn't say so, seeing as it was in reference to What is in the DMG - and if their house rules are LONG, why would they expect them to be in the DMG?

Let's not go too far afield, hey?

The toolbox is great. I don't love all the details, but it's great for it's breadth of coverage and organization. And I like almost all of it.

Absolutely not!

Bastion Events
1d100 Event
01–50 All Is Well
51–55 Attack
56–58 Criminal Hireling
59–63 Extraordinary Opportunity
64–72 Friendly Visitors
73–76 Guest
77–79 Lost Hirelings
80–83 Magical Discovery
84–91 Refugees
92–98 Request for Aid
99–00 Treasure
So when do you roll for these? Every bastion turn? every bastion turn when there are no issued orders? And what the bastion turn even is anyway?
