D&D (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

I don’t think they are tearing it apart, what they wrote is not something you do not hear here as well or justified by the content.

If this had been written by some reviewer (minus the plugs for the ToV DMG), I doubt anyone would point the review out as being particularly mean or something. The main objection seems to be that it comes from the Kobolds and that it is bad form for them to say anything about the ‘competition’.

Is it a good look? Everyone can decide that for themselves, it certainly is not reaching a level where I would be upset with them about it.

WotC is a bad company, owned by a even worse company, not trying to defend them. But to me, if you need to put down another product to make yours look good, its because yours is not that great to begin with... And its hard for me to accept all this moral high ground that Kobold Press wants to be in when they are literally a business partner of WotCs.

is this related to the article, because I am not seeing a moral high ground there. They say the 2024 DMG is heavily focused towards new DMs while theirs has more options for experienced DMs, and that is probably correct (haven’t read either fully)

I assume he’s referring to the timing of the ‘no AI’ announcement and the tone of their marketing around general OGL related stuff when they launched Black Flag. Though that’s just a guess. I’m sure he can clarify better.

It's related mainly to this part:

"For a while now, Wizards has had a reputation for discouraging homebrew. As a big business, they prefer for you buy their options. "

This sounds very cynical to me, when they have their products for sale on Wizards channels...

Wow, complete with missing words. I was willing to lean in to the article being a slightly over-egged attempt to position their book for experienced vs new GMs, until I read this.

I have a feeling it may not have gone through whatever internal review process they might have (or now realize they need to have).

You know that Kobold Press is in partnered with WotC right? Their product is literally on sale on DnD Beyond. This all reads hipocritical to me, even mre so when they say DnD doesn't support homebrew, while selling Kobold Presses third party products on their website...
And it's not like they're don't have a fine product they can talk up, negative comparisons are...unnecessary?
