It's a facet of the game that has existed since the beginning and I believe yes a setting for some people's game is needed in order to do what is considered a basic job of running it. Otherwise why are homebrewed worlds the #1 type of game ran?I guess my question is if knowing how to world build in detail is actually needed in order to do a basic job of running the game? (And I ask that as a HUGE fan of the 1e DMG).
I don't think so. What if you're planning on running mostly published adventures?

I'm not going to get into semantics around what is "needed" since as one gains experience and figures out what their own style is and how they want to run their game... what is or is not needed changes for each DM. However they should be introduced to certain core concepts of DM'ing as a beginner DM and I believe one of those things is worldbuilding. Again I ask what is needed that wasn't included to run D&D? What do we need to add so badly that warrants this section being removed?

we do not need to build a setting to run the game either, we are discussing if there is a better use for the pages taken up by it - and quite frankly the bastion system is even higher on the list of fluff that is not needed, the lore section is questionable too, but bastions top my personal listIn other words is there something missing from the 3 corebooks in order to actually run the game... that we need to remove Greyhawk and the worldbuilding section in order to fit in? If not what are we discussing here?

I like the idea of bastions, but very much not the execution of it in the DMG.
