Following the richest man in the world's attack on Wizards of the Coast for two paragraphs in the 500-page celebration of D&D, The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons 1970-1977, Elon Musk--who bought Twitter not that long ago--wants to know how much D&D's owner Hasbro would cost.

After the public sharing on Twitter of Jason Tondro's (who wrote the book’s foreword) private Facebook posts, Musk replied "How much is Hasbro?"

Hasbro's estimated capitalization is currently $8.71 billion, with $3.95 billion of debt.

It was on 21st December 2017 when Musk similarly enquired "How much is it?" before proceeding to make a bid for Twitter. He later tried to back out of the deal, but was forced to buy the platform for $44 billion in June 2022. Current estimates by investment firm Fidelity put the platform at a value 80% less than when he bought it, with a worth of only about $9.4 billion.

I'm not a fan of these super rich people, but I did like the Bill Gates version a bit more.
I dread a Elon version of D&D. Oh my.
I hope the folks a D&D don't bet against Elon and just hurry up with the SRD/CC plans. And please also open up 4e.

Oh my....

The problem is that if he buys Hasbro and ruins D&D, it could tarnish the entire TTRPG hobby for newcomers. Anyone who hasn’t played tabletop RPGs before might avoid it entirely, associating it with his toxic reputation: the hobby of sexist, racist, backward-thinking individuals.

This could damage the public perception of TTRPGs even worse than the satanic panic era, creating a stigma that could take decades to shake off.

eh, he is the head of a nonexistent department for at most 18 months. Nothing he says in that role has more weight than without that role.

Sure, Trump will listen to him more than Biden would, but given the clown show this new administration will be either way, I am not so sure that he will make much of an impression
I don't necessarily disagree, it's why I mentioned "depending on how things move forward". Add in two narcissists and I wouldn't be surprised if he's gone before Trump is sworn in. But with chaos also comes, who really knows what plays out with this circus.
Truly the darkest timeline. D&D goes to dudebro country, no diversity allowed, all grimdark. Horrible. I would laugh, but after Twitter became White Supremacy heaven, I don't think I can anymore.
Someone just needs to start BlueskyBro.

I hope he gets caught up in the next big "issue" and drops this. Last thing we need is Musk getting into the TTRPG (or CCG) industry imho.

We need to thank the radicals who got D&D5e and 2024 out into the public SRD, just like Ryan Dancey did before them with the d20 OGL, at least the community has a stake in the core rules and the common I.P.

Sadly, as an industry player, Hasbro, has been setting itself up for becoming a take-over target by non-hobbyist Capitalists like "Leon". Those types can point to digital wins like Larian's Baldur's Gate III and the A.I. hype, and even NFT plans within the community like Evil Games. Hasbro has made about $90 million by letting Larian make a D&D game
