Following the richest man in the world's attack on Wizards of the Coast for two paragraphs in the 500-page celebration of D&D, The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons 1970-1977, Elon Musk--who bought Twitter not that long ago--wants to know how much D&D's owner Hasbro would cost.

After the public sharing on Twitter of Jason Tondro's (who wrote the book’s foreword) private Facebook posts, Musk replied "How much is Hasbro?"

Hasbro's estimated capitalization is currently $8.71 billion, with $3.95 billion of debt.

It was on 21st December 2017 when Musk similarly enquired "How much is it?" before proceeding to make a bid for Twitter. He later tried to back out of the deal, but was forced to buy the platform for $44 billion in June 2022. Current estimates by investment firm Fidelity put the platform at a value 80% less than when he bought it, with a worth of only about $9.4 billion.

With Musk you know what you get.
The major issue is that actually that you do not. At all.

He is a man known for unpredictable behaviour, emotional outbursts and pretty much self-admitted drug use (of a variety of drugs as well as less meaningful weed, though his predilection for using the latter in public even where it will attract consequences indicates a certain cavalier attitude). He was forced to spend $44bn because he's prone to outbursts, and given that $44bn investment has declined in value (it was never worth more than $30-something bn, and now it's worth south of $9bn and dropping fast), it may be the most expensive emotional outburst in history.

Further, Musk is a total "nerd tourist". I don't say that to gatekeep, because it's fine to be a nerd tourist, but rather as a statement of fact. Why does that matter? Because he doesn't know anything significant about D&D. So what he would choose to do with it is entirely unclear. He could do essentially nothing - like basically re-publish 5E with the only major change being that he'd changed all the art out for edgelord stuff and made the text edgier (you know he'd be ultra-"triggered" by stuff like the diverse/positive portrayals of D&D races). Or at the other end of the spectrum he could stop publishing 5E, and turn D&D into basically RAHOWA, replete with terrible idiotic rules, incompetently-designed rules he thought was cool. You have to remember this is a guy who claimed to be one of the world's top Elden Ring players, and then showed off a build so painfully incompetent that it was clear he didn't even understand the basic mechanics of the game. Like your average 13-year-old Elden Ring player is doing a better job than him. I think the most likely scenario is that he'd hand D&D over to some kind of orbiter/reply guy of his who is an edgelord-y OSR type, or maybe someone like or even exactly Justin LaNasa, but we can't predict who that would be.

So no, you don't know what you're getting. Because you're dealing a very emotional, capricious and aggressively drug-using man who doesn't know anything about D&D.

The only good thing is, it's very unlikely anyone would lend him any money to buy Hasbro. As others have pointed out, Hasbro has a ton of bad debt, and on top of that, no lender would expect Musk to increase Hasbro's value. So to buy Hasbro, he'd have to liquidate assets and spend his own money - which he absolutely could do, but hates to do. So it seems like this is his usual smack-talk.

If he were to google his own name, how many hits do you think he would get? Probably a lot and more than he can read at any given moment. And this is assuming that he has the focus to do so.
I know I cringe having to seen his face whenever I open ENworld, and I hate to see the website desperatelly chase clicks with putting news about him, as if he's not an abusive monster acussed of sexual assault. It's gross to put him in the spotlight and we should strive to better quality of conduct. Elon Musk talking crap on twitter is not rpg news, it's him begging for nerd creed.

That is the funniest thing about it all, yes.

The richest man on the planet, arguably the richest man in human history (depending on how you calculate it), who could essentially being doing whatever the hell he wanted, living a life of complete luxury, his every need fulfilled, is instead acting like the worst guy you ever played D&D with, and desperately trying to get people like us to think he's cool.

And he's not even suceeding!

Is it the saddest thing that's ever happened, in the colloquial "sad case" sense of sad? It's certainly up there. How can you be the richest man on the planet yet also a "loser"? Maybe the biggest "sad case" on the planet? It's beyond belief. Thanks 21st century for making even Snow Crash look like it was excessively sane and reasonable.

I don't think EN World is desperate for clicks with putting up any news about him. More like they are doing their job by letting us know what might affect the gaming world. And right now, it's news about Elon Musk being Elon Musk.

The problem is that Musk craves attention and by giving him the spotlight you are contributing to him actually buying Hasbro because he WANTS attention the community gives him when he says crap like that.
Yeah, so I'm not going to be gatekeeped on what news I report. My job is to report news on this news site. You can read it or not, but I'm going to do my job. This isn't up for debate. Now, drop it, please.

He is clearly the guy who googles his own name, and I bet you someone already forwarded him this thread on twitter.

Hey Musk if your reading this, I'd really love a D&D Theme Park in the Greater Toronto Area. And a life sized robot waifu. And a horse, beautiful animals, actually **** it make it a robo centaur/pegasus waifu with bodyguard mode and keto master chef skills, thanks. I've been good this year Musk, I swear.
