D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I think the poster assumed that everyone would see it was obviously not meant literally.

Just to check, when you said it was a dog whistle, did you literally mean that it was a noise only dogs could hear?

The meaning is pretty clear to me. "If people weren't so ignorant of other games, D&D would never be their favorite game."

Because otherwise people would just say what they mean. "Some people play D&D even though it isn't their favorite game."

I mean, who are the dogs we would supposably be whistling to, anyhow? And why are we whistling to them?

I tend to agree with this... I've gone through several posts in the discussion multiple times, and I'm finding it difficult to pinpoint what the "obvious dog whistle" actually refers to. I suspect it might be "everyone's second favorite," but I'm struggling to even guess what it could be signaling. At the best, it's really good marketing that has reached near astroturf levels.

So you're now saying that the statement about D&D being everyone's second favourite RPG wasn't meant literally? Thank you for conceding the point.

I never said it was... I said the statement was damning with faint praise. Whether it was meant literally or not doesn't change that... you get that right?

So, to be clear, because nuance, metaphor, and hyperbole are forbidden, you literally meant that the post was a noise made through a whistle that only dogs could hear?

If the phrase doesn't mean what it literally states, it's a code phrase that means something else.

Do you accept that meaning might have been 'just about everyone likes D&D well enough to play it, even if it might not be necessarily their first choice'?
No. It is my first choice. It's the first choice for a lot of people.

"Some people play D&D even though it isn't their favorite game." Works.
