Sadly, Tolkien was still alive at the time to see it.

The legend is that this was shown once, in a rented theater, to fulfill the obligations of their contract, but it was all hand-picked audience members, so JRRT -- who presumably would have thrown a fit if he'd seen it -- was not among them.

Not a fan of the, ahem, changes to the plot, but I do love the artwork (not sure I can call it animation). Reminds me a bit of Cor Blok's Middle-Earth art.

The LotR movie was on Cartoon Network last night. Still as hideous as I remember.
