Agreed. Letting people know about all the awesome stuff other publishers produce, for 5e and otherwise, is IMO better for the hobby than hoping WotC will make the book you want the community to see. It certainly has a better chance of happening!
I'm willing to settle for WotC granting permission (through DMsGuild) for other creative folks to do that setting work. I don't trust WotC to "update" their own settings. All I want from Wizards is restorations and revivals of their existing IPs to save me the work of doing it myself. I don't want, say, a crafting book from Wizards because I know there are already dozens out there that have been done better by 3PP. Even the Fizban/Bigby books (I enjoyed Glory of the Giants) are really just splatbooks full of lore.
Honestly, I don't even see the point of them doing it anymore. They are sub-par one offs that don't get supported after the initial release. For those that want the old settings, they are out there in one form or another. I'd much rather see them go all in on a completely new setting and support it with a few smaller adventures and source books each year. Admittedly I'm curious about the forthcoming FR books, but if I buy them, I probably won't get much use out of them.I don't trust WotC to "update" their own settings.
If Heroes of the Borderlands is a big success, there's certainly a chance this could happen. An official Wizards 5E version of the B part of B/X and the start of a line of supporting adventures suitable for either it or regular 5E.
I believe it's free on D&D Beyond (I got it for free), so you could check it out there.Based on a few threads now, I am beginning to feel like AI might be the most misunderstood 5E book of all. i know I never bought it because I was not audience for the AP, but maybe I missed out?
Oh, yeah. In the 1e UA, there was a cantrip called firefinger that had the following in its description: "the caster speaks a word of power over elemental fire (such as ron-son, zip-po, or the much revered word, dun-hill". 1e also had gnomes (which are inherently sillyD&D has always been silly. I remember little comics in the 1e PHB and DMG, ridiculous monsters like sentient jello and flumphs, and plenty of pun names (Melf, Medium Rary) and joke material components (bat guano = potassium nitrate = gunpowder). Silly is D&D's middle name.
