Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

IIRC Tolkien was in one of the World Wars which inspired a lot of the story for LotR. Then the Counterculture of the 60s gave it quite a following. I doubt that it will be nearly as popular with younger generations to come.

Tolkien is still incredibly popular and influential (in large part thanks to the film trilogy). I don't think there is any reason to think it will be less so

Just me speculating, I don't follow the franchise anymore, but I'm surprised to hear that it's still so popular.

Underrated: the Rings of Power TV show. Visually a stunning masterpiece, the writing gets Tolkien's themes in a way that Peter Jacksom did not, amd the acting has been incredible. Destined to be well remembered, despite the Sturm und Drang.

Overrated: The Dark Knight Returns / Watchmen / The Killing Joke
I see where you're coming from. I don't believe any of those are overrated, but the problem, especially with Batman, is subsequent writers decided to base their characters off such work. For a number of years, especially in the 90s, Batman was an just a jerk, and I stopped reading comics in the early 2000s and never figured out of they recovered.

All Star Batman and Robin said:
What, are you dense? Are you $#^@!$%@ or something? Who the hell do you think I am? I'm the Goddamn Batman.

The DKR was neat because it was a different, cynical take on an older Batman. I don't need all my Batman comics to be like that.
