D&D (2024) Githzerai Psion? Thri-kreen Psion? Where's My Psion?

those are pure mechanics we likely do not have the conceptual space for 4 more casters to occupy. those casting class slots assume the mechanics for them could be refined to the desirable point.
There are 4 different flavors of psionics.

Each are paired with a different mechanical style which matches them.

The wizards, sorcerers and warlocks situation proves my point.

WOTC play tested and all encompassing Mage class due to the grognard thought process of "All casters are the same"

The idea was rebuked soooo haaaard.

The community would not accept a Mage class that still maintained 5es core principles.

A Psion is the same. It's 3-4 classes fighting for 1 slot
No, it's not. People who like one can also like another, raising the percentage that like any given version to 70%+ You are assuming that everyone is only going to like their favorite, and that's just not how people work. We are very capable of liking multiple versions.

And no, wizard, sorcerer and warlock fails to prove you point, as it proves MY point. I like all three classes, so in a poll that was looking for say Sorcerer at 70%, even though wizard is my favorite, sorcerer would get my vote towards hitting 70. Just like it would for a lot of people who like multiple spellcasting classes.

My point is that some people want the wizard. some people want the sorcerer. And some people want the wizard. And some of these people overlap.

If WOTC only offered the wizard, people who want the sorcerer and warlock would be dissatisfied. Many would like the wizard, but they'd still want the sorcerer and warlock.

The same goes for the Psion.

WOTC could take a stand and create a Psion of one of the 3-4 styles, but there would be A LOT of complaining because they didn't support the other types of complaining.

Unless they are going to fully flesh out their psionic class roster like 3e or 4e, supporting a Psion class and taking a stance would get them more criticism than praise.

You..............are..................wrong. At least as far as your general statement is concerned. This is not a zero sum thing. Some few people would be dissatisfied. Most, though, who like two or all three classes, would still be satisfied, just not quite as satisfied as if they received the sorcerer.

Exactly. Most would be satisfied to get one.

A LOT of complaining by a minority of people, yes. Just like has been happening since 5e came out with, let's see............barbarians, bards, clerics, druids, fighters, monks, paladins, rangers, rogues, sorcerers, warlocks and wizards. All classes have received a lot of complaints. Some more than others, but no class has been exempt. There's no reason to refuse to make a psion just because some people will complain.

At this point I'm starting to be happy WotC never made a psion, because if they had whatever they published would have spread and overgrown the greater 5e community, and many great takes on the concept by not-WotC would perhaps never have happened.

It's a zero sum because WOTC's 5e strategy is clown and minimal publication.

I think you're missing the step that I'm ultimately talking about.

Sales.

A Psion in the way WOTC currently publishes would not drive sales.

Not enough people would buy a book for WOTC's 5e Psion to hit their projections. And their setting with psionic focus aren't big exciting movers either. So a Psion would need some Xanatar/Tasha level content to drag the book with psions over the mountain of complaints and to the finishline.

A5E's would have happened for sure. They redid all the PHB classes, so I'm sure they would also have done so for psions.

I haven't looked at 3PP for classes. Has anyone redone the base PHB classes in a 3PP?

That doesn't make it zero sum. In fact, it's impossible for WotC to make it zero sum. To do so they would have to mind control every D&D player and force them to like one and only one version of the class.

If a majority of players like it, yes it would.

Unless you're creating a new entry point to 5e outside of WotC (like A5e and TotV), I don't think so.

I would very much like to be shown otherwise though! Love me some alternate design.

I don't think a majority of players will like their version of the psion enough to buy the $30-60 book.

That's the problem.

I can't see a lot of people liking the official 5e Psion but not liking it enough to buy the book.
