How would YOU change Shadowdark?

Right but you sound like an experienced gm but for some this could be their first time as they came here due to the kickstarter news

I don’t even think there’s a blurb in the book about just go with your gut or go with Todd Howard it just works

I mean, there is only one rule really.

On page 104, the bok tells GMs : The characters automatically succeed at what they are trained to do. Only use stat checks when
there is time pressure and failure has dire consequences.

On page 107 it says: If there were a rule for every situation, we would be living inside the rulebook instead of the game world. As the GM, you have infinite power with only a handful of rules. Stat checks and the standard DCs can resolve any action. You need nothing more. Rather than pore through the book, adjudicate using what you already know. Make a ruling, roll the dice, and keep going!

PCs should be capable, not Jar Jar Binks.

Then you lose the ability to have the Roustabout... which I love.

There IS an element of the absurd in this game, it doesnt take itself so seriously, and if you die, you die. You are not promised to be a legend in the making, you could be a chef in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Right . Do any of you realize Kelsey has actually created a faq as clarification was is needed. My thought it should be added to books going forward

My second thought is zines such as new classes should down the line be combined into 1 book

I looked it over, none of it seemed to important to me, but I would have to look again.

EDIT: Read the FAQ on Backstab, I am unmoved. I would give it out easier, and since there is the "Only Rule", I'm right, and it doesnt even need to come up again, for me.

Its that simple.

3d6 straight down has always been dumb. I love me some BECMI, but I'm using 1d8+10 instead. PCs should be capable, not Jar Jar Binks.

There's no reason why you have to do 3d6 down the line. This thread is showing that it's an easy game to hack. I like the "roll and pick" method if you are after a particular class. It's important to remember, however, that you are expected to have at least one stat at 14. Your talent rolls at every odd level are going to make you better at your class, with +2 to a stat being a very common roll. As an example, on a roll of 3-6 (on a 2d6 roll) fighters can gain +1 on melee and ranged attacks. 7-9 grants a +2 on Str, Dex or Con.

A wizard gains +2 Int or +1spellcasting on roll of 3-7 (stats cap at 18) 8-9 gives advantage in casting one spell you know.

So you are at least going to be competent in your class, if nothing else.

Can you link the FAQ? I am curious what it says.

Well we all run our tables differently. I like to be consistent and since I’m not the only shadowdark gm at my table I don’t want/need that pushback
