House of Dragons vs. Rings of Power (and a touch of Wheel of Time)

Anyone who gave up on Wheel of Time, I would suggest checking out at least the first episode of Season 3 (the first three episodes of the season were released Thursday). It's taken such a leap of quality that it looks and feels completely different. All three episodes so far this season have been quite good.
That was my take with season 2. It was a major leap in quality from S1, that took the show from a "sigh, why am I watching this?" to "alright this is pretty decent". So if S3 continues that trend up in quality sign me up.

My take exactly. Im not quite as impressed with S3 as folks here seem to be though so far.

Wow. You guys are a tough audience. There isn’t that much fantasy TV that I would so easily dismiss it.

All three of the series at least have a plot that means it’s going somewhere.

I’m working my way through From and as good as the production, the acting and the atmosphere is, i feel like the script is being procedurally generated two episodes ahead.

Didn't they say that about season 2? I never got around to watching it.

on the other hand, there is a LOT of quality tv out there nowadays, too much to spend a lot of time on lower quality shows.

Now I will say for S1 WOT wasn't terrible, it was a fine popcorn show for me....until I saw the budget. Once I saw the budget it actually ruined some of my enjoyment, because the show looked SO CHEAP that when I saw the budget numbers I just couldn't reconcile it. My friend and I joked they were having to pay out tons of bribes or were basically subsidizing New Zealand or something.

S2 was a lot better in quality, so I look forward to see if this S3 continues the trend.

Blame the pandemic so much for S1. They shot a bunch of it before March 2020, had to send people home, keep the sets intact, and then bring people back at a premium in early 2021 to finish it that there wasn't as much money for effects. They lost one of the main three actors indirectly, and because of it in a way such that they had to change the plot, so he wasn't in the last episode.

I could say a lot of things about Wheel of Time...but where the money went is pretty clear, the budget for actors, sets, makeup, clothes, SFX, etc. is absolutely visibile on screen.

in Season 1?

Actors - They have one decently named actor, everyone else are basically no names. Makeup and clothes?....it is CHEAP looking. the SFXs are limited and nothing special for modern shows.

On a $10 million an episode budget.... which GOT didn't hit till season 6 for example (now I fully respect some inflation in there, but even seasons 4 or 5 if you want to drop a bit for inflation)

Now again Season 2 had a notable uptick in polish, sets, clothing, effects, everything was taken up a notch to the point where I could say "yep I can see where the money is at". But S1...I have to assume (aka hope) the covid protocols really inflated their requirements

No, the costumes abd sets were obviously and extremely expensive...and just because the actors aren't stars doesn't mean they don’t draw pay. It was a large cast, and they all needed to be paid.

$10 million is a lot, but the show demonstrated it being spent.
