D&D General Matt Colville on the “Forever DM”

It would be nice if a Matt Colville video could be shared even once on here without it becoming about how people don’t like him or his delivery, and focusing on the topic instead, which plenty of people also do, it is just that it seem pointless that the same people always come in to say how they don’t like it - doesn’t that get boring?

I am not even talking about treating it like a + thread because there is plenty to disagree without getting hung up on whether you can “stand to listen”. If you can’t stand to listen then why even participate since you aren’t informed?

Counterpoint: you posted a 35 minute Matt Colville video without any additional commentary. The post is not discussing the ideas of the video - it’s informing people that the video exists. Hence, people will come in and post their thoughts on either the content of the video or their thoughts on the person in the video. Not everyone is up for watching long form YouTube content without some reason. If there’s something of use, timestamps are a great tool for drawing attention to a particular point in the content. You have multiple people looking for transcripts because they actually do have an issue with way the subject matter is being delivered, be that the speaker, the format, or both!

So if you don’t like people choosing what they want to focus on, such as the person delivering the video, you could help direct the conversation to what it is that interests you about the video, or even summarize the overall point of the video.

It’s cute that you think that would make a difference.

But anyway, it is not like I was complaining about just this thread or only threads I have posted, and while Matt Colville videos are the perfect example of this happening, it is not limited to them, but just tired of the fairly immature need to enter conversations for no other reason to say you don’t like the thing to begin with. But then again that behavior is pretty common on these boards (and I have probably been guilty of it too at some point, but I cringe to think I have).

I know I can’t control what people post about but jeez.

He’s IMO not even in the top ten most annoying D&D YouTubers. I wish he’d get to the point faster, but Geeze given the alternatives, Matt is at least someone I could stand to be in the seat next to on a transpacific flight.

Agreed. But then I envision the guy sitting next to me talking more loudly than necessary into my ear. He takes half an hour to get to his point while saying that the other passengers are probably be annoyed by his loud talking but he doesn't care. Then it turns out that the guy on the other side of me is the Angry GM and I pull out my earplugs. ;)

I think I'm the forever DM in my circle for a bunch of reasons:

1. Even though I generally get along well with folks, I have high social anxiety and trouble making new friends.
2. I love all of the building that goes with DMing - I love collecting and painting the miniatures and terrain. I've got 18 pages of notes prepped for my next session.
3. I learn games very quickly and retain the rules well.
4. No one else wants to do it. Or they do it for a few games and then basically decide that it's too much work. I have never once canceled a session because I wasn't prepared.
5. I love hosting people to play games.

I identify a lot with this. I'm a true blue introvert but put me in the GM seat and I really enjoy it. I may have to go hide in a dark room for a couple of hours afterwards, but it's worth it.

I get that you and Reynard are frustrated but clearly the guy invokes feelings. Calling people immature is not really going to stop them either, not to mention it’s its own form of name calling. Right?

I didn’t say the posters are immature. I said the desire is. People are more than one thing (thankfully for them).
