D&D General What races/species populate your DnD world?

I like most of the races except for halflings and dragonborn, both of which always struck me as kind of lame. I prefer kobolds or draconians when a dragonish humanoid is needed.

And also, basing everything around humans always struck me as kind of unimaginative.

Also I like the more furry-ish races.

That said, I'm never DMing anyway, so I'm not the one creating the setting. At least the prefabricated halfling character in the latest one-shot was also a were-raccoon
I like dragonborn ok, but like you I prefer kobolds and draconians. I still remember one of the reasons to play one in the 4e write up was "so you can look like a dragon".

easier to tell you what im not having:

dragonborn, tieflings, drow, 1/2-species, nonmammalian humanoids in temperate climes, gimmick humanoids.

For most campaigns, I won’t restrict races (except for flying races as difficult to balance around). In a themed campaign, I’ll limit races to a list (like a short list of Underdark races for an Underdark campaign). Even in a themed campaign, I would generally offer 6 or more races.

Lizardfolk etc live in far off hot places

Gimmick - ive not used the right word - all those pointless ones that are just orcs with a twist, so they might as well just be an orc clan with a special cultural feature.

Ah, so something like the Ondonti (FR Orcs that are LG, but otherwise the same as Orcs)? Does that extend to subraces, like the various collections of elves?

On Lizardfolk ... does that also extend to other non-mammal things, such as White Dragons? If not, any particular reasoning?

<Edit:> Also, what about Dragonborn?

In what game books do the Ondonti appear?
