What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

Well had another dice rolling nightmare session.
I only made 7 tests.
1 success with F
1 fail with H
5 fail with F.

So with no hope to do cool stuff on the cards/sheet was quite grim
Plus the baddies + to hit seem very good cf to our bonuses versus their targets.
My PC died, but right at end of the sessions fight so opted for unconscious.

Today I went to my local flgs (he’s built it up to 3 stores) and I would comfortably say he’s the dominant presence in my northeast state.
I asked about daggerheart as the store is mostly mtg/gamesworkshop/d&d along with board games and a small corner for the other RPGs
The store salesperson knew about daggerheart and probably like the rest of the USA got a limited supply
The store isn’t running it now (Wednesday night I’d d&d night or maybe something else if gm prefers) but the problem is there’s no books
For me I’m disappointed in darrington press as this is a miss. It’s a miss and that you have zero presence out there. Yes you have one of at conventions and live service but you might need to partner up with a bigger company

I think this is a somewhat silly attitude to be honest.

The issue is pretty clearly that Daggerheart succeeded wildly beyond the level at which Darrington expected it to. They're going flat-out producing this stuff (I just got the book they said wouldn't arrive until August, for example), and yeah, that means not absolutely everyone who wants it, has it yet. But that's not really a totally bad thing, because in general, people who want something don't stop wanting it. Not a totally hard rule, but it's a pretty reliable one. Supply shortages, so long as they're resolve in months not years, and there aren't obvious alternatives that are easily available, tend to actually work out okay.

Partnering up with a "bigger company" might make sense but it's not easily done and wouldn't resolve this problem in for at many months, potentially most of a year, by which time it may be resolved anyway.

You maybe right. I disagree somewhat

The hottest time is release. They don’t have enough books so for some it gets buried. There’s a new rpg coming out mcdm or something and if that company gets more books into more hands it wins.
You want to flood the market with your product to drown out the competition especially a new fish that’s moving in
Ill use my group and my state (not a tiny state when it comes to gaming ) and online shopping
My group for the most part plays 5e and shadowdark. I have 1 couple in the group that has copies of daggerheart (1 out of a core 7 players) . 4 of us are crit fans so we’re interested . We might not play daggerheart for another year based on existing campaigns
If my flgs had a copy I 5/50 would have purchased. I could tell there’s not a ton of enthusiasm for daggerheart and I wasn’t offered the option to backorder
Like I said you need this in stores just like you need an Xbox in stores at Xmas.

That can happen.

But there's no reason to believe it has here, because they've sold through their entire first printing, and seemingly second printing, and possible third as well? It's unclear. The book seems to be selling incredibly well so the idea that it's been "buried", especially when there's tons and tons of talk about it seems... unlikely.

You mean Draw Steel!

Draw Steel is cool, but there is no possibility it's going to be the kind of massive hit Daggerheart seems to have been. It's a weird-but-cool tactical-focused RPG, very much derived from 4E, and has a very specific and very strange setting which isn't bad, but is going to massively limit its appeal compared to games which are not setting specific or have "generic" settings.

I doubt Draw Steel! is going to sell out and be unavailable, let alone "get more books into more hands". Plus, it's not aimed at the same people. I might be okay with either, but most Daggerheart people aren't looking for a tactical-combat-oriented RPG.

So wait you have Daggerheart and everything you need to play it? You just want more copies? LOL? How many do you need lol? We're going to have 1 copy among 1 DM + 5 regular players lol. Is that not enough lol?

Sorry wait are you claiming Daggerheart isn't popular, yet has repeatedly sold out over and over and over again, and you're complaining about how it's sold out, but it's unpopular? LOL again? Make your mind up!

I wasn’t offered the option to backorder
By whom? Your FLGS? That's on them if so. I did backorder it from my FLGS and got a copy yesterday.

I’m just giving you a story from the ground.
We play online so we can wait

Let’s see what kind of presence it has at cons. Kelsey of shadowdark has her game running at cons and she has well known game masters running games in various states. Not hearing any of that for daggerheart and Kelsey is smaller in scope
Where’s your flgs and how’s it playing there? Daggerheart night?

It’s fantastic it’s selling out but for example I just keyed in daggerheart I got reviews only and not a lot of let’s plays

It’s apples and oranges, really.

Shadowdark is an OSR game with underlying mechanics very similar to 5E but with changes to push things in a decidedly old-school direction. Anyone who’s run any OSR game or old-school D&D could run a passable Shadowdark game with a read of the book and whatever prep time they normally take for such a game. The quick character creation and high lethality make it great for one-shots and convention play. And there are about 50+ years worth of content you can mostly directly draw from. So it’s very easy to pick up and play.

Daggerheart is a Frankenstein of new and old that everyone will need time to adjust and learn to run it well. Even people who ran it during the open beta are having some trouble adjusting to the final release. To run Daggerheart well you need to either come from a PbtA or BitD background already or learn that style of play. That learning curve can be huge for people only used to D&D. Besides that, the game is focused on long-term OC play with the PCs as the protagonists. Character creation is slow and involved the entire group. This makes it especially bad for one-shots and convention play.

It’s like judging a monkey and a goldfish based on which is better at climbing a tree.
