All the armed mercenaries the extremely rich person will send after the party when he realises he has been duped I expect.

The potential problem is the mass production and sale of real magic items, not making high value short duration fake ones (which you can also do with certain spells).

I'm hoping Artificers, or at least the Artillerist subclass, gets proficiency in martial ranged weapons. Going by the preview from the book, it would be weird for that subclass to use Arcane Firearm on these weapons and not be proficient in a gun or a bow.

I think I remember one of the excerpts saying that Ranged Weapons can be used as an Arcane Focus with the subclass and Arcane Firearm. So shooting Fireballs out of pistols definitely is a thing with the Artillerist.

It will be ...if they give them back firearm proficiency. As of the UA draft that wasn't a feature anymore, and only Battle Smiths got it as part of their Martial Weapon package.

I'd really like it be an option for Artillerists. As you say, the image is very cool. But it wasn't mentioned in this preview, so we'll have to see what next week brings.

Iirc the preview specifies that you can turn a wand, rod, staff or "martial ranged weapon" into an arcane firearm. That implies they get proficiency with pistols and muskets.

That was the implication. I trust nothing as certain until I see the full final draft.

WotC clearly can't do such a thing, which is why this scenario you describe was never a problem with the original Artificer.

You've invented these hypotheticals to defend the changes to the class, but your own arguments are much more damning for the "revised" Artificer.

I was merely giving a reason why they might have chosen to do it that way. Whether or not you believe it or accept it doesn't really matter because the book has already been written so it is what it is and there's nothing we can do about it. How it's written is not going to change. Thus you can either choose not to use the 5E24 Artificer, use it but amend your own fluff explanation as to what gets created and why and for how long, or use it as written and be annoyed by it. Whatever works for you.

The ENTIRE Trades Guild is FED UP with the Artificer's crap and pools their entire vast funding network to set up an eternal head hunt on said Artificer for throwing the whole economy outta wack.

Also the King is mad that one of said items caused the death of his son by poofing, at the worst time, and is going full Rick Flag Sr with his desire for revenge.

Whether or not you believe it or accept it doesn't really matter because the book has already been written so it is what it is and there's nothing we can do about it. How it's written is not going to change. Thus you can either choose not to use the 5E24 Artificer, use it but amend your own fluff explanation as to what gets created and why and for how long, or use it as written and be annoyed by it. We'll see how well WotC's bold strategy of "derail classes to appeal to the people who didn't like those classes" goes, then.

We have reached the point of simultaneously claiming that the previous incarnation of the class causes narrative issues, while declaring that DMs should warp their narrative around the issues the new incarnation of the class will inevitably produce.
