Masters of the Universe | Official Trailer

Not feeling the Eternia-Earth link. As with the 80s one I ask myself, why? If they need to link He-Man to Earth then don't bother, you're missing the point. Seems like one of those properties that will never get a good big screen adaptation. I can hear the Thundercars Movie mewling, spinning in circles until it finds a cozy place to sleep.
That's fine if you're not feeling the Earth link. I was a bit skeptical when I heard about it. However, Eternia has had a link to Earth since the original cartoon. Queen Marlena is from earth. The He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special even partially takes place on earth. If Queen Marlena is hiding Prince Adam on Earth, likely with a partial memory wipe from the Sorceress, then I think it's a potentially interesting new angle. It doesn't look like most of the movie will take place on Earth either.

As to why, (1) production costs, and (2) a means of exposition through gradual introduction of key ideas.

The after-credits scenes are just Skeletor dropping truth bombs and then running away. Rinse and repeat.
"I could write a book about all the things you don't know about!"

Unlike the 80s MotU movie, at least this one isn't set on Earth for the entirety of the movie. I've never actually seen the original live action MotU movie.
Unfortunately, my dork ass went to see it in the theaters as a kid....by myself. The 80s were great for leaving your kids alone at the movies with prowlers abound, Needless to say, I'm still scarred.
Easy. Production costs. And no, this He-Him does not hold a candle to the Dolf, from what I saw.
Dolf? Regardless I don't think production cost was or is the issue but rather a studio giving them the money. You had Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Muppets, Back to the Future, Gremlins, even that blockbuster...the Golden Child. You'd think back then that someone would capitalize on a huge carton and toy line, but it didn't happen, Today, they are planning on nostalgia paying the bills.

I was wondering if there were any canon ties of Eternia to Earth. Was that the pilot episode? Now that you mention it, searching my brain 42 years after I do vaguely remember that.
It was added to lore when DC took over publishing the Masters of the Universe comics circa 1982 and they had Prince Adam meet Superman (who has been injured by Skeletors magic sword).
Adams (unnamed) mother being "an Earth woman lost in time and space" is what justifies Adam recognising Superman from the stories his mother told him as a child...

It is in the episode Teelas Quest that we get the flashback to Queen Marlena being Astronaut Marlena Glenn from Earth. Notably Queen Marlena tells Adam that "Earth is a kind a boring with no magic or talking Tigers, but the people are beautiful". <= and that alone I think justifies this alternate history where young Adam is sent to boring Earth for his protection.

  • Teela's Quest (episode 6): We find out that Marlena Glenn was an astronaut from Earth who crash landed on Eternia and married King Randor. (This is also when we find out about Teela's backstory tied to the Sorceress.)
  • Visitor's From Earth (episode 119): Two more astronauts from Earth (Col. Mark Blaze and Maj. Andrea Steele) are brought through a vortex to Eternia with a missile they planned to use against a meteor heading towards Earth.
  • The He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special: We find out that Queen Marlena introduced the Earth holiday of Christmas to the Royal Palace. Orko flies a rocket that lands on Earth, where he picks up two Earth kids who teach him (and later Skeletor) the meaning of Christmas.

That was a great explanation. Thanks! I remember those comics, but I couldn't tell you one iota about them. I think that a lot of the 80s brands, (GI Joe, He-Man, Transfotmers, MASK, Silverhawks, Escape From Gilligans Island), will ever get a good big screen representation.

You got it backwards.

The cartoons were ads for the toys. The toys were the endgame, not the cartoons.

As a Gen Xer this piqued my interest, but given the quality coming out of Hollywood, I'll wait for the reviews. Hopefully this isn't a bait and switch and ends up being mostly about Teela or She-Ra
