D&D 5E (2024) Strategies and Tactics Barbarian (2024)

& I hate "dmg" arguments so its crazy to think I will add to one, but people tend to gloss over the GWM bonus attack because of the situational nature and you can add the greataxe free cleave to that too. On my GWM champion I out-race the dmg of our dual wielder mightily just cleaving hordes with a frequent bonus attack off reducing something to zero or crits... all done with a d12
Ya I don't really like the "DMG" argument either cause everything is so situational. I was going only trying to point out that chance to miss matters and often more reliable > slightly more raw numbers like in the case of light weapon + nick vs two hander.

Your cleave example is a great one. It does great extra damage when you can get it to proc but does nothing if you can't or are fighting 1 big enemy.

It’s also not single target damage which further mucks up the comparison. Because single target damage is most always ‘better’ than equal multitarget damage. .

Had this come up yesterday. Lvl 4 barbarian making 3 attacks with gwm.

18 str +4 dmg
+2 rage
+2 prof
+1 weapon

+7 to hit.

That's fair. I've seen my fair share of "failure to launch" to even land the hit to start the vex chain.. often not mentioned with that build, but landing the first attack with a vex chain is a condition that often isn't mentioned.. I'd honestly rather stratify some more versatile weapon mastery and have a better source of advantage than a poopy weapon with Vex, which ends up being a poopy redundancy when you consider the other bunch of ways you can have advantage. With that same fighter I asked the DM about Purple Dragon Commandant, so he spends plenty of time bloodied and therefore, the bounds of accuracy on him stay relatively high without worrying about landing that first hit

In 4e it was a bit of a joke, but in 5e, a forest gnome barbarian is actually great.
Think about it:

You have speak with animals you can cast fast a few times but now you can also cast it as ritual as much as you like.

You can use any weapon you like. You can do dual handaxe, handaxe + scimitar (or sickle if you like that style more), handaxe + dagger or even use a two handed weapon or a shield.

Best thing: you either have proficiency or advantage on all your saves.

I think you can make a very tough guy.

You might also mix some rogue levels in, if you want to jist use a short sword and a scimitar.

Didn't miss much.
Pretty good, bringing home to the barbarian though. I just don't see the point as much with 2weap fighting & vex.l (besides personal fantasy). Using reckless attack to start a vex chain is redundant, to harmful. I would either reckless or tank my way into Purple Dragon (for easy advantage) and use better masteries. Rage bonus applies.. as it does for greataxing. Single targets? Switch to the Greatsword with unmatched accuracy and still crit-fish with advantage. Less attacks with greatsword, but it is on a much less reduntantly useless & stronger weapon chassis.... these options are much better with "Savage attacker as well"

Different build. I would consider dual wielding with a fighter splash.
